Young excels at Sydney Royal: The Sydney Royal Easter Show has been a huge success for a handful of locals this year, including Young poultry hobbyists, Michael McGrath and Rebecca Johnstone, who took out eight wins in total at the annual show held in Sydney for two weeks over the Easter long weekend. The duo entered a combination of 130 chooks and ducks.
Young a special place for the navy: BILL Miles joined the Young High School cadet unit when he was a student. At age 16, he joined the navy as an apprentice aircraft electrician and today, the naval lieutenant will march alongside his colleagues from the Aviation Maintenance Standards division of the RAN's Fleet Air Arm - who travel to Young every year - in local Anzac Day services.
Power outage affects 1100 premises: Essential Energy crews responded to an unplanned supply interruption affecting power supplies to 1100 premises in parts of Young's CBD Sunday morning.
Group inundated with Chinese orders: “It was non-stop all day,” Young and District Multicultural Association secretary Helenie Carmody said of their Chinese and Filipino cuisine stall at the first Lambing Flat Chinese Festival. Young woman judges at Sydney Royal: One of our own, champion rider and national rep Bridget Sell, was this year selected to judge the lady and girl rider classes in the ring events over three days at.
Locals claim three major titles at Sydney Royal: The efforts of the nine locals who represented Young in the ring events at the Sydney Royal Easter Show have been described as “amazing”.
The town now not only has the illustrious Crane Trophy in its possession but we can also lay claim to the 12-17 years Champion Girl Rider and the Champion Show Hunter Galloway. Among the nine from Young was 11-year-old Elly Sabidussi who made her exciting debut at the show aboard “Weston Magician”.
Anzac Day 2014: Hundreds of Young residents will gather for Anzac Day services and ceremonies around the shire today, ranging from dawn services, marches, 11am ceremonies and sunset services.
James’s epic ride a tribute to his grandfather: James Lamb wants to make sure Anzac Day is all about honouring the sacrifices made by Australians at war.
So yesterday he set off from Sydney on an arduous journey by bike to Young. The decision to make the journey was inspired by his late grandfather Bill Lamb who was a Rat of Tobruk.
Action on Bendick Bends: Young’s mayor wants to reassure the town that council is doing everything in their power to address the hazardous Bendick Bends that have recently seen three accidents – one a fatality – within a two week period. The councillor announced yesterday he has booked a meeting with the Wagga Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) regional manager in Wagga on May 6 to discuss what can be done to increase the safety of the bends that run through Bendick Murrell. He also has hopes to approach NSW Minister for Roads Duncan Gay about the issue.
Artwork on sale in school exhibition: It was Operation Art at St Mary’s Primary School last term when the whole school submitted three pieces of artwork each in a special exhibition. This wasn’t just any school art exhibition. Not only were just four pieces selected and entered into a state-wide competition called Operation Art, but school organisers also decided to take the opportunity to sell the artwork to the Young community. Year 6 students Grace Shannon and Bridie Minehan were among the top four from St Mary’s to have their artwork sent to Sydney.
Pink Buns saving lives: Young bakers are rolling up their sleeves to help raise $1.5 million for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) in this year’s Pink Bun Campaign. Hayley Sims (8) was a happy customer when she purchased some pink finger buns from Sam Langfield, Ron Rosengreen and Jemma Long.
Recognition left, right and centre: A teenager shaving her head for suicide prevention, the owner of a champion ram and a relay team fundraising for cancer research are the latest recipients of council’s Community Recognition awards. Kingsvale man Tony Manchester - who was among the three nominated for an award - with his Grand Champion Corridor Ram at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Robert returns to Long Tan, and pays tribute: EARLIER this month Robert McGlynn performed a very special duty when he laid a wreath at the Australian memorial at Long Tan in Vietnam. Mr McGlynn, who served with the 4th Batallion of the Royal Australian Regiment, returned to Vietnam as part of a tour in March.
‘Pickers v bulldogs: The first round of the Group 9 Rugby League Competition is set to go off with a bang this Sunday when the Young Cherrypickers come up against long-time rivals the Cootamundra Bulldogs. Officials are hoping the game played on home turf is the advantage Young needs to begin the season with a win.
Champs an almighty success: THE Regional NSW Dressage Championships at Young have been hailed an enormous success after an action-packed three days of competition came to a close yesterday. Some 185 riders and 250 horses made their way to Bendick Murrell Sportsgrounds for the event.
