Up to 50 local competitors joined hundreds more at the rodeo grounds at Toompang Racecourse for the team penning on Saturday and the team sorting on Sunday.
In total nine team yarders from Young cemented themselves within the top four placings over the competition, earning themselves points that contribute to securing spots in the NSW finals at the end of the year.
Both the Young open team of Will Day, Damian Nott and Rod Thorp and the junior team of Johnathon Scott, Jane Lehane and Jack Grant won the team penning on Saturday.
Another Young junior team then took second in the same penning event, this time consisting of Sarah Roberts, Scott and Lehane.
Lehane could almost be described as Young’s top performer at the weekend for also bravely facing the opens in the same event and coming third (with Eliza Taylor and Tom Climpson) and fourth (with Jake and Eliza Taylor).
Young’s Abbie Grant was a member of a mixed-area junior team with Maddy and Abbey Weincke who came third.
This time it was silver for Will Day, accompanied by his twin brother John Day from Junee, in the open event in Sunday’s team sorting.
The sorting also had Emma Blake from Young - with teammate Britnee Martin - come third in the opens, while Michael Roberts from Young – teamed with Jeff Jones – came fourth.
Roberts kept Young’s winning streak going by taking out first place in the juniors for team sorting with a lad by the name of Brock Taylor.
She then backed up her performance with returning Young teammate Lehane, still in the juniors, by coming third.
And Scott was another from Young to secure yet another placing, this time fourth – with Mimi Day – in the junior team sorting.
The weekend’s NSW round was the first local round for 2014.
Young Pro Rodeo president Paul Blake said the town usually hosts two to three rounds of the competition per year.
“Depending if they’re (the competitors) a member of the association, [the placings] will earn them points that will determine if they’re in the finals at the end of the year,” he said.
