Capacity fields in all seven races, exciting racing and close finishes highlighted what was without doubt one of the best meetings held at the track for sometime.
President of the Young Turf Club Keith Carmody, in his presentation speech, praised the efforts that contributed to the smooth running of the day by a small but dedicated team of workers both on and off the track.
The feature race of the day was taken out by the Tumut-trained Tea Clipper for trainer Kerry Weir and his jockey Simon Miller.
The winner now of five races from 25 starts, the grey five-year-old gelding finished strongly over the concluding stages of the race to claim the prize from the Wagga-trained Street Pride and the early leader and solid pace maker Poker Pro for Cowra-trainer Kevin White.
Poker Pro was having start number 101 having previously winning 11 races in his long racing career.
Racing opened on a winning note for Gundagai trainers David Blundell and Michelle Russell when Lord Biga arrived just in time to defeat another Gundagai-trained galloper in Lady Ellusive with Aussie Thunder taking the minor prize.
The overall time for the 1000 metre journey was two seconds outside the track record for the distance reflecting the excellent racing surface that had been prepared over the past months.
Race two continued to produce close finishes with Bathurst trainer Peter Stanley saddling up Kahlua Storm in the Benchmark 55 Handicap for fillies and mares again over the 1000 metrs.
The judge posting a half head win in favour of Kahlua Storm over the grey Silver Ribbon and the Forbes-trained Skidaddle for Billy Hayes, again a sub 60 second performance by the winner who was perfectly ridden by Eleanor Webster-Hawes.
Canberra trainer and long-time supporter of the Young Turf Club, Darryle Rolfe, was rewarded for his consistency with a win in race three, presenting Royal Regard in perfect condition to record another close victory over The Youngfella ridden by another young lady in Megan Taylor with Mortaman finishing strongly over the concluding stages to finish third.
Tumut trainer Kerry Weir again was the recipient of the winner’s cheque in race four when topweight King Tides In, ridden by Simon Miller, came down the outside in defeating Poison Pill who looked at big chance at the 100 metre mark, with Tiara Time for Billy Hayes taking third money.
That winning streak continued for the popular trainer when Easiestgameonearth was awarded a half head decision over the fancied Choisziata and another favoured runner in Darook Park in race five.
Again a time just outside the track record for the distance reflected the excellent racing surface.
Followers of local jockey James Geppert were rewarded in the final race of the day when the David Daniel-trained Canberra galloper Storm Tracker scored a convincing win over the favourite Alluring Belle and another Canberra-trained galloper in Ishshah for Norm Gardiner.
Training honours on the day going to Kerry Weir who saddled up three winners with jockey Simon Miller collecting the jockey’s honour with three wins also.
The club would like to thank all those that supported the meeting including sponsors, owners, trainers, jockey’s, volunteers, bookmakers, Lions Club, Young Witness, Radio 2LF, 2YYY and everyone else who made the day possible.
