The choir triumphed in the Open Vocal Choir section - which it has now won for the past four years - and also took out the Open Sacred Choral section.
Choir members were quite concerned, however, as they appeared to have scared off all the competition!
So, it was with some trepidation that they sang for the adjudicator not knowing whether the standard was sufficient to be awarded the major prizes.
They need not have been worried.
The adjudicator, Mr Paul Scott-Williams, awarded 85 points for the Open Vocal and 87 points for the Open Sacred Choral sections – a wonderful confirmation of the choir’s performances on the day.
Following earlier community performances at the Wallendbeen Red Cross Centenary and the Young Relay for Life, the eisteddfod was the first competitive venture with the choir’s new conductor Rodney Clancy.
Rodney only commenced rehearsals with the choir in February and wasted no time in challenging the adult choristers with two pieces known to be the most difficult in the repertoire.
Pemulwuy and Sure on This Shining Night were prepared and presented for the Open Vocal eisteddfod section with much success.
“The choir rose to the challenge and all members should be very proud of their eisteddfod results,” choir accompanist and Young Regional School of Music director Stewart Bruce said.
“The efforts of our school’s largest ensemble group are especially memorable as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the School of Music,” he said.
Choir members are not resting on their laurels, though.
Yesterday they performed at a concert to promote their ideal “to share the joy of singing” in the Boorowa Central School auditorium .
There they presented their eisteddfod items and much more, as they sought to reach out into the wider community.
YRSM’s 40-strong Choir of the Southern Cross is always looking for new members.
The Choir meets weekly during school term time at Young Regional School of Music on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9.30pm.
Why not come along and experience what they do?
