The random drug-testing operation was held from Friday. June 27 to Monday, June 30 in Wagga Wagga, Tumut, Gundagai, Young, Cootamundra, Naranderra and Temora.
Between 4pm and 5.30pm on Monday a 32-year-old female and 19-year-old male both from Young were stopped for random breath and drug testing.
Both drivers returned a negative breath test but tested positive for having illicit drugs in their system while driving.
Police are waiting until results are received back from NSW Analytical Laboratories in Lidcombe before taking any action against either driver.
More than 600 drug tests were conducted during the operation with 50 drivers arrested and taken for further screening.
Of the 50, 48 tested positive to either cannabis and/or methamphetamine.
A further two drivers were charged with mid-range PCA offences, and 46 infringements notices were issued.
Police will also allege one person was detected driving while unlicensed and another was a suspended driver.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, said he was concerned that so many drivers seemed to think they could drive while under the influence of illicit drugs.
“There were two Random Drug-Testing trucks deployed from Sydney for this two-day operation, which involved highway patrol and general duties officers.
“This tasking of resources demonstrates the commitment to making NSW roads safer by working to identify those driving under the influence of drugs.
“This operation should also act as a warning to every driver in this state who thinks they may escape the attention of NSW Police – we will be continuing to conduct these operations in metropolitan, regional and rural areas,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said.
