Winter is upon us: The icy winter weather is upon us, but cranking up the heater to stay warm isn’t an option for many in the community. So Young’s charities, including Young St Vincent De Paul volunteer Trevor Willmott-Potts and Salvation Army corps leader Laurie Anderson, have made a call to arms, urging locals to donate winter woolies to help the community’s most needy make it though the coldest months.

Big day at Brock Street: Mayor Stuart Freudenstein, along with Lyn Anderson, Coby Sargeant and Young Preschool president Sheree Mason, officially opened the preschool’s new carpark and shed on Wednesday, June 25.

Who are you going to call? Barb Busters!: concerned at the number of native animals becoming caught in barbed wire on fences, Young District Landcare decided to try and do something practical to help. They came up with the idea of “Barb Busters”. The group recently held two working bees on Young properties, removing over three  kilometres of barbed wire.

New life for dehydrator: Council said the conversion of the prune dehydrator in Wirrimah was a rare opportunity to preserve the culturally significant buildings, while approving the development application at council’s monthly meeting in June. Mr and Mrs Dreverman put forward the application, saying they would retain the character of the building.

A whole new world for mum and daughter: This month’s Southern Cross Cinema volunteers of the month are none other than mother and daughter, Heather and Tahani Ward. Heather and Tahani have been volunteering here for close to 18 months and love being involved with the cinema because in Tahani’s words – “it is fun!”


Fluoro disco caps off school term: The end of term was as good an excuse as any to give the children at St Mary’s Primary School a chance to get together and have a fluoro disco. Pictured are Jordan Waugh, Sophie McAllister, Oscar Nuthall and Brianee Taylor. 

Young High School excels on the court: The Young High School girls tennis team of Emma Godsell, Monique Dorman, Jemma Long and Stacey Dorman have plenty to boast about after taking out the Riverina All Schools Tennis Championships undefeated.

Top four for Hennessy: The Hennessy Yr 9/10 touch sides travelled to Jerrabomberra on Wednesday, June 18 to compete in the NSW All School Touch Carnival. The Hennessy boys side played some skilful football to position themselves fourth on the table at the conclusion of the day. Top four for Hennessy: The girls side played exceptionally well, posting some convincing wins on the board. They also encountered some very well-drilled sides and did well to place third in their division. Fire deemed suspicious: Police are investigating a fire at Toyworld in Young after a group of young people was seen running from the scene on Sunday night.

Students prepare for film festival: It was lights, camera action at the Southern Cross Cinema last week, as students got a taste of special effects and film production. They were there to start working on short films to enter in the 2014 Yfilm festival, using it as an opportunity to brainstorm and develop storyboards. Dane ready for big time: “It’s like Razorback meets Wolf Creek meets Housos and if they were to have a love child, this would be Uncle Ted.” That is how Forbes filmmaker and our local cinema manager Dane Millerd describes his soon-to-be-released horror film, There’s Something In The Pilliga. The feature film has been eight and a half years in the making and now it is ready to hit the big time.

Strike for local venue: THREE strikes and you’re out. That’s the cut-throat policy licensed premises face if they break the rules - and six Riverina hotels better watch out, because they only have two chances left. This includes one hotel in Young, who was indicted for serving liquor outside authorised hours. Venues in nearby Temora and Cootamundra were also among the perpetrators.

Future moves for Young North: The Charles Sturt University (CSU) Future Moves program presented interactive workshops at Young North Public School on Thursday, June 27 to encourage students to explore opportunities that come from higher education. NAIDOC WEEK 2014: before even being allowed to vote, indigenous Australians had been fighting for Australia in major conflicts across the globe. This year’s NAIDOC Week celebrations recognise the contribution and sacrifices made by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island men and women, fighting in defence of the country. Family fights to keep killer behind bars: An inexcusable act. An act that cut Jordan Anderson-Smith’s life short and drives his family’s ongoing fight to keep the seven-month-old Wagga boy’s killer behind bars. The State Parole Authority (SPA) has adjourned Young man Christopher Hoerler’s latest bid for freedom to August 7, when submissions will be made during a public hearing.

Holiday fun at Young’s PCYC: UP TO 30 children have attended the PCYC Vacational Care program during the school holidays. Tom Slaven, Faith McMullen, Charlie Fourie, Nick SLaven Logan Tubey, and Braxton and Zara Anderson playing “Angry Birds”.

Carmody packs a punch: Former Young man Peter Carmody has always had a passion for martial arts, but all his dreams came true last year when he was selected to represent Australia at the All-Japan Martial Arts Championships.  The gold belt came away from the championships with three runner-up trophies, a clear indication of his efforts that in some instances saw him compete against black belt competitors. 

Welsh a strong contender: Young Cherrypicker Fran Welsh is among the top eight footballers named on the first Weissel Medal leader board unveiled by Group Nine. Currently sitting on eight votes at number three, the first-season recruit is setting a cracking pace in the coveted best and fairest count.
