He was a ''chirpy, helpful'' man, who volunteered to take match photos and often bought lollies for the boys. But club president Rocco Perre was wary and after three years, Mr Druery left.

''He initially showed up because he knew some of the kids in one of the teams and he got really involved and sponsored a couple of the boys’ teams,'' Mr Perre  said.

''He’d chip in with the canteen and assist the coaches, and the kids loved him. He’d have his own 'man of the match' and give them a bag of lollies.

''[But] we had heard he had been asked to leave a baseball club because of some complaints from parents.''

It wasn't until more than three years later, at 6am on Thursday, that the single, 50-year-old cable technician from Chipping Norton was arrested and charged with molesting and raping six teenage boys over two decades.

Mr Druery did not apply for bail on Thursday. He unsuccessfully asked Liverpool Local Court to place a suppression order on his identity because he feared for his safety in custody and his family’s safety, including his parents, who attended court.

Police documents tendered in court detail 19 allegations of indecent assault and rape on six boys he befriended through roles as a youth worker at Padstow Baptist Church, an assistant junior coach at Bankstown Baseball Club and a fake Salvation Army worker visiting a Vanuatu school.

In November last year, he travelled to a school in Vanuatu and told the principal he was a Salvation Army worker distributing toys to underprivileged kids, police documents state.

He invited five boys back to the Coconut Palms Hotel to swim in the pool and took them shopping, buying them clothes, ice-cream and soft drinks. He allegedly molested them in his hotel room.

He offered to fund a holiday to Sydney and, in May, the boys stayed at his Chipping Norton unit for 10 days.

Two were allegedly molested, including being forced to perform sexual acts and being massaged sexually in the shower.

An anonymous call to Crime Stoppers the same month led police to unravel the decades of alleged abuse that Detective Sergeant Graham Hibbs described on Thursday as ''very disturbing''.

From 1992 until the early 2000s, Mr Druery befriended boys through the Padstow Baptist Church youth group and would invite them to his house for sleepovers, where they would allegedly go skinny-dipping, watch movies and sleep in the same bed.

Several boys told police they woke in the night to Mr Druery assaulting them.

One boy ''laid awake for a period of time trying to convince himself that the accused had just made a mistake'', police documents state.

Another, who was allegedly raped in the pastor’s office after Mr Druery told him he ''wanted to try something on you that I saw on SBS'', told police he ''did not know at this stage how to go about telling anybody'' because his parents were heavily involved in the church.

Mr Druery allegedly took one boy, aged 12, to McDonald's and to junior rugby league matches after church. He would then take him home, where he would molest him and say ''lots of people would think that’s a big deal, but they are silly. We know it’s not a big deal''.

Police believe there may be more victims and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Druery will make a bail application on Friday.
