Uncovering our Chinese history: Young and District Family History Group president Margaret Hall and Young Tourism manager David Newberry have joined forces to start a Chinese family history project to reveal Young’s Chinese history. 

History project launched: Young Family History Group member Ivan Fitzgerald discovered the story of George Moo Hong, who was born in China and settled in Young. He was featured in a 1955 edition of The Young Witness at 105 years old still working in the paddock. This discovery is what launched the Young Chinese family history project.

Lunch amid the cherry blossoms: A cherry blossom luncheon in a Young orchard on September 21 has been planned as a forerunner to December’s National Cherry Festival.


Pampering pedestrians: Young Shire Council is continuing to pamper the town with new footpaths as part of their PAMP program, this time focusing on Marina Street. Council worker Dennis Dicecca and his colleagues busy extending the footpath outside Young Aquatic Centre and Tresilian Park in Marina Street.

Thank you goes a long way: The Stockinbingal community wanted to thank local RFS volunteers with a barbecue for their efforts during the Smiths Lane fire on December 4, which included firefighters from Young.

Local lad does it again and again: Murringo man Alex Rotzler takes home not one but three major apprentice awards - Apprentice of the Year in Motorcycle Mechanics for NSW/ACT, Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the Western Area of TAFE and Top Apprentice in Vehicle Trades Award.

Mrs Brown celebrates 100 years: Violet Pearl Brown celebrated her 100th birthday with family from Young, Canberra, Sydney, Bowral, Moss Vale and Goulburn at Mount St Joseph’s. She is a mother of two and has five grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.



Seniors celebrate early Christmas: Joan Hanrahan, Velma Saines, Eileen McGlynn and Janet Bourke were all smiles at the Young Senior Citizens Christmas in July lunch. 

Jon full of hope: It has been a character-building year so far for Jon McCorkindale in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Championship. He has finished on the minor podium at two rounds, but a mixture of bad luck and inexperience has seen him miss out on more podium appearances.

Big year recognised by sport council: YOUNG’S Casey Wall and Jake Walker continue to be recognised for their rugby league abilities. In 2013 the pair trialled for the Harold Matthews Under 16s Canberra Raiders team, and after several more trials were successful in making the final 25-man squad. 

A decade of sponsorship: A big commitment from Corbetts Tyre and Battery Service who have sponsored the U10s Young Cherrypickers for 10 years. Vandalism “a joy for no one”: It took Sarah Sullivan two weeks to hand-make a banner promoting St Mary’s Primary School’s spring fair to save the school some money. It took two seconds for vandals to destroy it.


Ex-nurses on a mission: Young’s ex-nurses were given a brief history lesson on the role nurses played during major conflicts at this year’s annual Mission Lunch. Derailment like a “small bump”: Local man Matthew Apps was among those on CountryLink’s Melbourne to Sydney train that derailed on Friday who described the incident as feeling like a “small bump” and the sudden halting of the train. 

Turner so close: Hennessy Catholic College student Riley Turner has plenty to boast about after making it into the Combined Catholic College rugby union side and was within arm's reach of qualifying for the NSW All Schools 16s squad.

Yabbies hold off Phantoms: The Young Yabbies clawed back a half-time deficit to secure a 34-all draw against an improved Leeton Phantoms side in Leeton last Saturday. Pictured First Grade player Inoke Rasabale.

Bears go down in narrow defeat: Burrangong Bears First Grade players Brett Campbell and Matty Leoflath take down a Cargo Blue Heelers in their home clash.

A dog act: “Enough is enough,” Young Lions Junior Soccer Club president Paul Cameron said of all the dog waste that continues to be left on Young’s sporting grounds. He said the act was “so religious now” he and his committee have come to expect it at their home ground Gus Smith Oval, having to do a walk of the grounds every time they need to use them. Council has agreed to trial a dog waste bag dispenser stations.

Re-living history: One hundred years on from the start of World War One, Young and District Arts Committee is putting on a series of plays to commemorate The Great War and want you to get involved. President of the committee Lauren Frith is producing the plays, which will be four unique productions in Temora, Harden, Cowra and concluding in Young. Auditions will begin Monday.


Students return home from Cambodia trip: Thirty-three Hennessy Catholic College students, together with three parents, four teachers and the local parish priest, returned from their two-week mission journey to Cambodia on Monday afternoon. Chloe Silk and her mum Wendy were especially excited to see each other.

Last week of school holidays a blast: Abdallah and Malake El Sabsabi and Lee Sheedy went to watch Rio 1 at the Southern Cross Cinema last week.

League tag strong in junior comp: Junior League president Nick Hall claims the fairer sex has made a big change to the Young Junior League this year and he is not talking about the canteen. After trialling league tag, a non-contact rugby league hybrid game, in the seniors age in recent years, Young now fields three girls teams, including a junior side. Pictured Maddie Anderson.

FFA player comes home for clinic: Former Young Lions Soccer player and now Football Federation Australia member Malcolm Ward (centre) assists Doug McKenzie and Paul Cameron with a clinic held for 30 young soccer stars.

Big numbers for Warnabrook: This Sunday, July 20 the  Young Motorcycle Club will be hosting Round 4 of the Warnabrook Series for 2014  at ‘Bunyarra’ on the Grenfell Road.

Saints look for finals position: The Young Saints made the unenviable trip to Dubbo last weekend to take on the Demons in a confident mood, with the U18s winning 96-23 and seniors narrowly losing 87-64. Pictured is seniors captain Sam Herzich.
