Postcard France: ice hole diving

I'm in a little chalet in the French ski resort of Tignes, hauling on my gear. Yesterday, that included ski boots and long-johns. Today, it's a watertight dry suit, gloves, full face mask and anti-freeze regulator. As I step outside and waddle across the ice in my fins, white-capped mountains glitter around me, and fir trees slump under epaulettes of snow.
