The Saints were confident of a victory, but alas this wasn’t to be with Young defeated by 62 points, 111-49.
For the first two terms the Saints held solid, and by the main break were only down by 19 points. But a brilliant second half by blue veteran Frankie Bright who ran buckshot out of the middle and into the forward line, lead the Cowra side to a commanding and unassailable lead by three quarter time.
“Our guys just had no answers to that third and final terms and our ill-discipline really added to our woes,” committee member and senior player Geoff Harmer said.
“You can’t get on the front foot when you give as many 50 metre penalties as we did last week – it was disappointing.”
Kai Frame for the second week running was named best on ground, and along with captain Sam Herzich, did their best to stem Cowra’s momentum.
In the forward line Young took their chances and converted attacking raids into points, but they didn’t have as many chances as the opposition goal sneaks did.
Chris Thompson and Ben McInerney toiled hard and Ethan Cummins played a consistant game.
The Under 18s didn’t have a game last week and Jarrod Pope, Zac Callaghan, Ethan Silk and Chris Carrie gave their all for the senior outfit.
Ruckman Luke Simms won most of the ruck contests and roamed the oval all day.
The back lines really had their work cut out for them and the senior guys in the final lines of defence like Rence Cummins and his brother Fred, along with Drew Morris, guided and got support from the likes of Robert Flynn and the Stewart’s Jewellers players player recipient Jason Loader all day.
“The two back lines really dug deep and all of them can hold their heads high in the way that they never gave up,” Under 18s coach and seniors manager Ray Martin said.
“The guys in this team, what they lack in skill they more than make up for in the guts that they play with – they are a courageous side.”
Tomorrow will see the Saints travel to Bathurst and every bit of that courage will be needed.
“We’re going into tomorrow cruelled by injury and unavailability to some key players, but every time we put that jumper on we play with pride and for the bloke beside you, so we’ll once again put the effort in,” Martin said.
The bus will be leaving at 9am from behind the Young Hotel, and any supporters are welcome to join us.
Good luck to the 18s and seniors tomorrow, go Saints!
