Stepping up into her first year competing in the 13 year girls age group was no hurdle for the Young North Public School student who breezed through three rounds in singles, doubles and mixed doubles to place her in the quarter finals.
“In her first round Mili had a pretty comfortable win where she won it in straight sets,” Vonarx’s talent development coach Col Maher said.
Vonarx then proceeded onto the second round that proved more challenging than the first, resulting in a super tie breaker (first to 10 points) to determine the victor.
“She won the first set, lost the second, and in the third set she got there in a super tie breaker – she only just got there,” Maher said.
Moving onto the third round proved to be another success for the youngster who, according to Maher, played very comfortably and had another great win in straight sets to make it to the Quarter finals.
Unfortunately Vonarx was unsuccessful in progressing from the finals and was knocked out 6-2, 6-1.
“I think Mili’s efforts probably weren’t quite what she was looking for, but it was still a reasonably strong tournament for her,” Maher said.
“In her overall performance I’m happy where she is situated at the moment.
“In the next 12 months she will step up into stronger tennis and she is very capable of doing that, she’s a very clever player.”
Vonarx has since competed at the Gold Junior Tournament at Ulladulla where she again qualified for the quarter finals in both singles and doubles, as well as competing at the Tumut Junior Development Series for the South West Region where she took out the 13s girls category.
She will progress onto the Champion of Champions to be held at Griffith on August 17, and will take part in the final round of the South West Series at Young on August 3.
