Young Shire Council has decided to enter into a new five-year lease of the Young Scout Hall with the local scout group following a request from the NSW branch of Scouts Australia.
The request was tabled at council’s July 16 meeting.
In 2009 council was forced to terminate the Scouts’ lease when they failed to pay their annual lease fee and after unsuccessful attempts to address the issue.
According to a report tabled at the meeting prepared by corporate services director Greg Armstrong, investigations by council staff revealed that the local group had actually ceased operations.
“Previous committee members had moved away or had left the scouting movement and the facility was no longer in use,” he wrote.
The building remained vacant for the next five years.
However the Young Scout group has just recently reformed and, with the aid of new office bearers, has recommenced scouting activities.
The group asked for council to allow them to reoccupy the hall so they could expand scouting in the Young Shire.
“We’ve been moving on it for a long time. It’s good to see it happening,” Councillor John McGregor said at the meeting.
Providing there are no objections from members of the public within the next month, Mayor Stuart Freudenstein and general manager Peter Vlatko will authorise the lease.
