The first game for Young was against the home team, and although dominating most of the possession and having numerous opportunities, Young went down 1-0 to Forbes.
The second game of the day involved a team Young has become very familiar with, although usually on the wrong side of the score sheet, Orange Cyms.
This game was always going to be a sounding board as to how the team would fair during the carnival/gala day season.
After some great work by our midfielders, Frazer Burns and Elliott Dodd, Theo Burns was able to force Orange Cyms to concede an own goal, giving Young a 1-0 lead.
After some goal-to-goal play by both teams, Orange struck back to level the scores 1-1.
During the second half the Young team started to outshine their more fancied opponents and with some outstanding work by Lachlan Cooper, Michael Cram, Harry Thompson and keeper Kyal Barnes, Young were able to continue to keep Orange scoreless in the second half.
Will Walker, after some great lead up work by the midfield, scored his first goal for the day to give Young a 2-1 lead.
The score would stay 2-1, but only due to the efforts of some tough dedicated play by Sammi Oehm, Zak Bunt, Tessa Long and Will Arthur.
The third game of the day was against the Far West Academy of Sport.
This game was dominated by Young from the outset.
After gaining confidence against Orange, the team gelled and played good, consistent football and came away with a 5-1 victory.
Kyal Barnes saved some great shots from the academy team, but was unable to prevent a penalty kick from finding the back of the net.
Theo Burns scored two goals this game, as did Frazer Burns, but the game will be remembered for Justin Flannery’s rampaging run with the ball, up the centre, beating five players and calmly slotting a magnificent shot into the back of the net.
Young’s fourth game was against Belnorth from the ACT.
These two sides have a bit of history, as they both contested the Young carnival final a few years ago where Young went down 7-0.
This game started strongly for Young, taking the lead early with a wonderful left footed shot by Will Walker.
Will Arthur continued to cause trouble for Belnorth down the right side, with Theo Burns and Michael Cram linking with Will on a number of occasions.
Opportunities were very limited for Young though and Belnorth ended up winning 3-1.
Although going down to Belnorth, 3-1 wasn’t the desired result, the team showed true grit and character to not let the game get too far away as in previous meetings with such teams.
Coach Paul Walker would like to thank the team, and parents and guardians of the team for making the trip to Forbes, and the team as a whole would like to thank their major sponsor Donges Supa IGA.
