Detectives say who's next: Detectives said their sights were firmly set on further unravelling the web of drug crime in Young, after a $14,000 drug bust on Thursday. A 59-year-old Young woman is expected to be charged detectives discovered a secret room in a Henry Lawson Way property shed housing a hydroponic setup, containing six large and mature cannabis plants.


Camp gives voice to 50 singers: Students from Young High School were among the 50 talented singers selected to attend a unique choral camp last week.

Bendick bends signage erected: “All the signs are up” announced Mayor Stuart Freudenstein on Thursday. He was of course referring to the erection of the new warning signage on the Bendick bends, which have been the focus of concerns since three accidents – one a fatality – occurred over a two week period in April.

Local businesses reach regional finals: The NSW Business Chamber has announced the finalists for the Regional Business Awards, with Young boasting three. Katie Rolfe from Framework Group Central South West in Young made the final cut in the Young Business Executive category, while Pointsbuild and Framework Group Central South West again are finalists in the Excellence in Small Business category.


Food Hall a reality: A dedicated group of volunteers are working behind the scenes to bring the Young Food Hall to life, including Deena McGregor, coordinator Laurel Merrin, Karen Everdell and Trevor Dawe, who were running a fundraising barbecue last week.

Sami’s brief trip home: Rising local country singer-song writer Sami Cooke was home for one week amidst her five month tour of Queensland. But most of you would have missed her as she’s now returned to the Sunshine State to perform in shows for the remaining two months of her tour.

Sargent claims victory: Young's rising karting star Tom Sargent has taken out the Rookies class of the NSW Closed State Sprint Kart Championships at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Kart Raceway.

Pacers take on challenge: Young Pacers Blake Apps, Harry Thomson, Zac Teachey, Declan Brebner, James (BJ) Doyle and Angus Jones attended the NSW Country  Development Program Camp in Dubbo recently.

Abattoir optimism: The expected re-opening of the Young abattoir in the coming months has created optimism in the local jobs market, with employment agencies reporting an influx of interest in jobs at the site.

Scouts make a comeback: The Young Scouts are back and plan to reoccupy their hall in Blackett Avenue after a five year hiatus. Young Shire Council has decided to enter into a new five-year lease of the Young Scout Hall with the local group providing there are no objections from the public.

Quad bike accident victim released: A 42-year-old local man who was airlifted to Canberra from the scene of a quad bike accident in Young on Saturday has been released from hospital. According to police reports, the man was riding in an undulating paddock when he misjudged a mound of dirt and the bike flipped forward. The man landed heavily on the ground, sustaining several injuries.


$400K for sewerage scheme: Young’s Sewerage Scheme will receive more than $400,000 in additional funding, Katrina Hodgkinson announced on Monday.

Drug accused plead guilty: THREE of four men alleged to be part of a drug supply ring, which included a $5.5 million cannabis plantation north of Young, pleaded guilty to multiple drug charges in Batemans Bay Local Court on Tuesday. Their cases were committed for sentence at Bega District Court on October 20.


The (true) story of the winter snake: A weekend report of a local woman’s scrape with a snake serves as a warning to district residents to be alert and aware even during the winter months.

Soup day success: The Young Hospital Auxiliary's soup day fundraiser for the hospital attracted 150 people to the Young Town Hall last Friday and raised $2500. Round 13, time to shine: THE Young Cherryette’s have plenty to celebrate after taking their first win of the 2014 season - a 12-point victory over the Junee Diesels. Leabeater to compete alongside Australia’s best: Doug was recently invited to compete in the Croquet NSW Bronze Medal event at Tempe  alongside 10 others in NSW. He's also now been invited to play in the Australian Men’s Singles Championship in Adelaide.


Rise for Alex, $600 raised: Displaying the heart they usually play with, the Young Rugby League U11s decided that without having a game to play on a recent weekend, they would take donations for the ‘Rise for Alex’ program and send the funds away to contribute to the worthy cause. Home destroyed: An out-of-control fire burnt a Bribbaree house to the ground yesterday afternoon. There was no-one in the house at the time and its cause is now under investigation.

Brazen attack on showground: The Young Showground is in the process of installing CCTV cameras at the grounds after it was targeted two nights in a row by “brazen” vandals.

Young drug peddlers face court: A police dragnet that caught three drug peddlers at Young earlier this year has resulted in two people being given jail sentences and a third admitting to 12 offences. Alison Kathleen Jones, 43, pleaded guilty in Wagga Local Court on Wednesday while Cecelia Ruth Hardman (also known as Cruden) is appealing her three month jail sentence and Alex Jones withdrew his appeal on his four month jail sentence this week.

Man charged over armed robbery: A man from Young accused of robbing the Tolland service station while armed with a cricket bat faced court over the incident for the first time yesterday.

Barbara’s conservation work rewarded: Murringo’s Barbara Holloway is one of two recipients of a 2014 Private Land Conservation Grant for outstanding conservation efforts. She is set to receive $870 that will go towards bush regeneration works including weed control, assisted natural recovery of bushland and plantings.

Young High tries their luck in Country Cup: What they lack in size they make up in skill, and that’s exactly why the Young High School’s Under 13 rugby league team made it into the top four sides in the Country Cup.
