“This is fantastic news for the local electorate”, Katrina said, “and it’s part of the NSW Government’s commitment to ensure every single school zone in the State gets a set of flashing lights by the end of 2015.
“Flashing lights slow drivers down in school zones and make the roads safer for our children, which is great news for school communities,” Katrina said.
“I have been lobbying for flashing lights across the electorate for many years now, and am pleased that the NSW State Government has acted on this really important issue.
“First we completed the flashing lights rollout for schools on higher risk roads in NSW, including several in Burrinjuck.
“The second phase, now underway, will roll out flashing lights to more than 1,500 of the remaining schools without flashing lights across the state.
“As part of the rollout which focuses on delivering by Local Government Areas to ensure cost effectiveness, we will see lights installed in Boorowa, Cootamundra, Cowra, Harden and Young Local Government Areas from November 2015.
“From now until December 2015 we will be installing flashing lights at more than 100 schools per month.
“The lights will continue to include back-to-base technology which ensures they operate consistently and any faults can be addressed quickly.”
“These lights will be retrofitted to existing school zone signs at the main entry point for each school and include flashing lanterns that we know are effective at slowing drivers down.
“This is an exciting milestone, we are installing the flashing lights that Labor couldn’t install in 16 years of government.
“In four and a half years we will have covered all the school zones in NSW and delivered on an important commitment to parents and families,” Katrina said.
Katrina said flashing lights were just one of many initiatives the Liberal & Nationals Government has introduced to help protect our children and remind motorists to slow down.
“Outside the classroom, we have infrastructure including high visibility signs and ‘40’ pavement markings on all roads with a school zone,” Katrina said.
“Inside classrooms, students are learning critical road safety skills through our road safety education curriculum including SafetyTown.com.au
“We’ve also got the Speed Adviser app for android and iPhones that uses audio alerts to inform drivers of operating school zones,” Katrina said.
