The Under 9s have finished premiers, while the Under 11s, 13s and 15s have all made the finals. And last but not least, the Mighty Under 7s have had a smashing season and finished with more recruits than ever.
Firstly our premiers - the Under 9 Yabbies - played their final round against Cootamundra and Grenfell on Sunday to secure and finish as outright Premiers and winners of the SIRU Under 9 Rugby Competition.
The boys’ first game against a very determined and well-drilled Cootamundra team had them off to a slow start, but the boys rallied and at half time were leading four tries to one. They became complacent and argumentative in the second half to let Coota back into the game and let each other down to hand Coota the win 35-30.
The second game against a tough Grenfell team saw the boys play a much more positive and structured game, tackling well and passing the ball around to secure a big 40-nil win.
Overall highlights were great defensive play by Dan Shannon, Jayden Hampton, Dan Smith, Wayde Mills and Alby Dowling, followed up by strong running from Jack Lane, Max Coupland, Ainsley Telfer, Ned Hufton, Hugo Kirkwood, Tom Burdett, Tom Rowntree, Harry Nuthall and Rafa Bonsembainte.
Congratulations to coaches Hufton and Lane and all of the boys on an outstanding season and for the great spirit and enthusiasm in which they played.
In the Under 11s the Yabbies came up against the strong Temora/ Grenfell combined outfit that had a significant size advantage.
Not to be out done the Yabbies really stepped up in the forwards with Sam Smith, Wyatt Mills and Charlie Sullivan all working well in the scrum and around the ruck.
Jacob Maslin and Will Martin dominated in defence allowing the backs to carve through the opposition defences with Bevan Foxall and Max Kirkwood each getting two tries.
Rampaging runs from Will Wadell and Harvey McGregor secured victory with Grenfell scoring two late consolation tries for a 34-22 victory.
The second game saw the boys come up against the top-of-the-table Coota outfit.
With Will Cusack leading the team they came out firing with Jordan Wells and Dylan McCorkingdale making great runs.
The stand out performance was by Will Waddell whose confidence soared by making several great tackles.
Although the boys went down 25-12 they showed that they can definitely match it with them and on their day could knock them off.
The 13s showed great courage and determination yet again when we faced an arch rival-Coota.
After a shaky start to the first half, Archie Bulger and Charlie Crisp had the boys warmed up and they dug deep to come away with a great win.
Despite the season ending injury for Nick Jenkins, brother Tom rounded up the troops and with an epic start to our game against Grenfell and James Schiller cross three times with support play from Jack Lockhead.
Continuous hard workers Ethan Mccevoy and Albie Cavanagh led the forwards with Nick Alcorn crossing the line to seal the win for the boys, securing second place on the ladder.
Under 15s first opponent was Coota assisted by Pat King and Chapo who kept pinching the yabbies ball. Ultimately the speed and mobility of our backs and forwards was too much for Coota, with Young winning 24 to 12.
Tries to Ben Davis, Sam Davis, Dale Prindable and Jarrod Livolsi. Best and fairest went to Will Munday, Ben Davis and Jarrod.
Second match against Tumut again saw Chapo in opposition colours with a stand out performance.
Great passing and support play by Tom and Daniel and the speed of our forward rushes saw Young win 48-nil. Sam Davis found his kicking mojo converting from anywhere.
Tries to Dale (2), Ben (3), Sam, Kane and Jarrod. Best and fairest were Chapo and Ben Davis followed by Daniel and Liam McGregor.
And finally our Under 7s, who may be small but with big hearts and smiles.
Sunday saw us play against Cootamundra and Temora and demonstrate the skills developed during the season.
Teamwork, team pride, respect and having fun were all values on display.
Stand out runs by Oscar McCann, Grace Stoney, Will Bryant and Jock Coupland and all players looking to pass to their teammates where they could made for great sideline barracking.
Well done 7s – Young will look forward to what you can show us again next year!
Round 1 of the semi-finals are in Grenfell this Sunday starting at 10.30am.
