The No. 1 pick from the 2007 AFL draft, who has been sidelined with a broken foot, said he was likely to play mainly as a forward for the remainder of the season, but planned to build his fitness and match play over the pre-season in order to play primarily as a ruckman again next season.

In promising signs, Kreuzer moved freely around the half forward line before pinch-hitting in the ruck alongside out-of-favour ruckman Robbie Warnock. He played 50 per cent game time, split over four quarters, finishing with 10 disposals, three marks, three hard-ball gets, three clearances, one inside 50 and 12 hitouts. He had only one scoring shot, in the second term, which was a behind.

Kreuzer's return had been brewing for weeks given he returned to the training track six weeks ago. He initially suffered the injury in last year's final, but had the foot operated on again after round one to help it fully heal.

Kreuzer, who was last week reinstated on the club's primary list from the long-term injury list, is considered a chance to play at least one of the Blues' remaining home and away matches, against Port Adelaide on Friday night or against Essendon in the final round.

Kane Lucas was the Blues' best against the Borough with 31 disposals, while Patrick Cripps (25 disposals, 17 of which were contested) and Jeff Garlett (18) showed plenty of touch.

Despite Kreuzer's presence, Matt Watson was the Blues' most effective forward with three goals.

Meanwhile, Collingwood's thrilling come-from-behind 14-point win over Geelong at Simonds Stadium and Sandringham's 20-point win over Werribee has upset finals machinations heading into the final round next week.

Werribee, which has dropped to eighth and leads Geelong by only a game and percentage in ninth, must win against Frankston on Sunday to remain in the eight. Geelong will be hoping for a healthy win against Essendon at Simonds Stadium on Friday night, and for the Tigers to lose, in order to qualify for finals and push for an unlikely third consecutive VFL grand final.

The Cats were in the box seat with a 16-point lead at the last change before the Pies piled on eight goals to three in the final term to nail an important win, which locks them into fifth spot. They face Bendigo next week.

The Pies' top four hopes were dashed, however, when Box Hill smashed Bendigo at Box Hill City Oval to retain fourth spot by a game and a half.

For as clinical as Tony Armstrong was in the midfield for Collingwood along with Corey Gault, Jesse White - who was demoted from the Pies' senior squad - was the difference with his strong pack marks and four final-quarter goals.

Patrick Karnezis was also solid and put the Pies in front mid-way through the final term.

The last quarter fade-out by the Cats is likely to cost them the chance to play finals, which will hurt its AFL team as much as its own finals aspirations given there will be nowhere to send players for match practice and fitness after next week if required.

Geelong's loss was gold for the Zebras. Sandringham's win at Avalon Airport Oval against the much-fancied Tigers guaranteed it will play finals after jumping to seventh spot.

St Kilda forward Trent Dennis-Lane was heroic in the third term with three goals, as was Adam Cockie who was relentless in the midfield.

Dennis-Lane's fourth goal early in the final quarter gave the Zebras the breathing space it needed.

Dennis-Lane was excited to help land the Zebras in only their second finals series since 2007.

"We started to stick our tackles a lot better instead of letting them get the little handballs out," Dennis-Lane said.

"It's a good win. We changed up our structure a little bit ... I was happy to cash in on the scoreboard."

Matthew Kreymborg, who has been one of the shining lights for the Zebras this season, kicked three goals. His third edged the Zebras clear in the third term.

Spencer White, quiet for much of the day, was lively in the final term and his goal pushed the Zebras out to a six-goal lead mid-way through the quarter.

It was all one way traffic and Werribee, which had been a premiership chance only weeks ago, is in crisis.

Last week, it lost probably its most important player, Majak Daw, to injury for the rest of the season, and with Sandringham's relentless pressure, the Tigers were rattled and rolled.

Tom Simpkin fought hard on Werribee's Ben Warren, restricting him to three goals.

North Ballarat, which had won 10 of its past 12 matches in the lead up to its home clash with Williamstown, held the Seagulls goal-less in the final term, but it wasn't enough to secure victory. It lost by 14 points.

In Saturday's other match, Hawthorn ruckman Sam Grimley was the star with six goals in Box Hill's 63-point win over Bendigo, which will play its last ever match against the Pies at home next week.

Brad Sewell was among Box Hill's best, as he pressed for a senior recall ahead of next week's blockbuster against Geelong. Mitch Hallahan and Billy Hartung are others who may come into the mix.
