History uncovered: The new owners of the Mill Tavern Jason and Jenni Fliedner (pictured with daughter Amelia and employee Codie Harrop) uncovered these boards detailing the history of Young between 1826 and 1972,  while renovating the bistro.

National Engineering: What once stood as a national steel manufacturing company with an office and multiple buildings in Boorowa Street and employing more than 40 staff. Now is almost a vacant lot with just the administration building standing.

Schofield’s eyes on the prize: Talented young golfer Ben Schofield has taken a step in the right direction to achieving his dream of becoming a professional golfer. The 11-year-old was selected to represent the Riverina region in the Primary School Sports Association championships to be held at Port Macquarie on September 8 and 9.

Parole granted: AFTER two previous failed bids, Wagga baby killer and former Young man Chris Hoerler has been granted parole on the understanding he will be deported to his native Papua New Guinea on release.

Industry leader dies, aged 86: Local grazier Francis Michael Davidson OBE, a pioneer of agricultural politics in Australia, passed away at Southern Highlands Private Hospital in Bowral on Tuesday, August 7 aged 86.

Slow start to Wagga bus service: It was a slow start for the pilot Wagga bus service which made its first run to the regional city centre last Thursday morning. But that doesn’t daunt Young Community Transport manager Kelly Rolfe, who said their Canberra service started out the same way. Gripping finish: Young captain-coach Luke Branighan was clearly the difference as Young kept its place in the queue for the Group Nine finals by sending the Brothers packing back to Wagga, 26-22 at the weekend.

City ends Yabbies’ march to finals: Finals football will elude the Young Yabbies First Grade squad this season after succumbing to a powerful Wagga City outfit 61-10 in Wagga last Saturday. Pictured First Grade player Jayson Smith.

Locals urged not to panic: “It’s like a black snake,” he said. “Leave it alone and it will leave you alone.” This was John Byrne’s warning to residents who may be worried their homes contain Mr Fluffy asbestos. Young was one of 14 councils across the state to recently receive a letter from The Asbestos Coordination Authority  after it was revealed homes could still contain the loose-fill asbestos, which was supposed to be rid of in 1988.

Farewell to retired old village: A landmark institution was this week being reduced to rubble ready for transformation into a carpark. Demolition crews moved in on the former Young Retirement Village complex on Monday, fuelling speculation this was the first step in the development of a new multipurpose medical centre in the town.

Marketing campaign a winner for agents: LJ Hooker Young has topped the state to take out the Excellence in Marketing award at the network’s annual NSW awards evening held on Saturday at Sydney’s Star Casino. Pictured are Christian Rowan and Colin Durham.

Fireman’s ball returns to social calendar: The Young Rural Fire Brigade is bringing back an event that is understood to have been absent from the Young community calendar for the last 25 years. This event is a fireman’s ball - on Saturday, September 6 - and it’s not too late to secure your ticket.

End of season high: THERE has been a mixed bag of results for the Burrangong Bears this season as they made their return in the Woodbridge Cup after failing to field a team in 2013. Jake Levett had a standout  performance in the final match.
