In an extraordinary turnaround, the Yabbies secured a 46-5 defeat to Wagga City in Young the previous week before to beat City on home turf in the major-semi and give them a shot at the silverware.
While the result would have left Wagga City officials scratching their heads at the sudden reversal in form, club president Ben Reid said it speaks volumes for the commitment and drive of the club and players.
“We are in a rebuilding year and the club, the players and the town have really gotten behind us,” he said.
“A grand final spot is nice, but we will still be working hard to support the boys leading into the grand final in a week’s time to bring home the Cup.”
The Yabbies face the prospect of coming head-to-head with Wagga City again in the grand final if they can beat Wagga Ag College in the preliminary final this week.
Aggies will have their tails up after defeating Albury 38-5 in the minor semi-final.
Young’s senior rugby club was well represented elsewhere in semi-finals with Third Grade and the Under 17s also competing.
The Under 17s continued to show their irresistible form with a convincing 39-5 win over the Temora Tuskers in the qualifying final last Saturday.
The 17s will face the Wagga Waratahs tomorrow in Tumut for a place in the grand final.
Yabbies Third Grade weren’t so fortunate, going down 33-nil to a well-drilled Junee Rams side in the qualifying final last weekend.
The Yabbies threatened for most of the first half with good possession and field possession, but Junee’s defense proved insurmountable with the Rams turning defensive pressure into points.
Junee will play Wagga Waratahs in the qualifying final tonight in Wagga for a place in the grand final against either Wagga Ag College or Hay who play the other qualifying final on Saturday in Albury.
