Running on a high after last week’s great performances at Gundagai and then the Wedding of the Year and town comp finals, the Young teams will be looking to finish the season.
Sunday morning saw Junior Rugby League hold their inter town comp Grand Finals!
Sunday was a great day with lots of exciting games and all players showing off their skills.
A special thanks to all the coaches of the town teams for all your time, dedication and support you have put into helping build and support the children’s skill and love of the game.
Congratulations to all of our town teams who played so well on Sunday, especially to our champions - the Under 7 Panthers, the Under 9 Rabbitohs and the Under 11 Knights.
David Shillington who was present from the Canberra Raiders was very impressed with not only the quality players, but the people he met.
In the Under 7s consolation final we saw the Sharks take on the Eels with the Sharks winning.
For the a Eels this was a tough effort by the boys who all played to the best of their ability. The improvement throughout the year has been tremendous, particularly for the first season boys.
A special mention to Hardy, Chookie, Oscar and Mark whose efforts this year have been outstanding.
Tries for the Eels went to Hardy Glover who scored all (3).
For the Sharks congratulations on a great win. You have all improved out of sight!
Tries scored for the sharks went to Nate Reid (2), Jesse Steel (1) and Toby Dowling (4) with Toby Dowling, Thomas Slavin, Nicholas Slavin, Jesse Steel and Nate Reid all kicked (1) goal each. Man of the match for the Sharks went to Toby Dowling.
In the main grand final of the Under 7s we saw the Panthers verse the Broncos. This was a close and exciting game with the Panthers winning by two, taking the final score to Panthers 18 and Broncos 16.
For the Panthers - wow, what a game!
Big runs by Nick Canellis, Riley Noakes, Edward Maloney, Zac Corcoran, Oliver Karsten and Ryan Karsten. Wonderful try saving tackles by Nick Canellis, Cooper Smith, Jesse a Jewitt and Darcy Spring.
Wonderful tries by Edward Maloney (1), Caleb Schiller (1), Nick Canellis (1), Jesse a Jewitt (1). A brilliant goal by Caleb Schiler.
For the Broncos this was a close game with both teams playing very well.
Billy Lamb, Braxton Anderson, Charlie Moore, Quade Bloor, Jack Woods and Shaun McAlister made some great tackles. Marcus Ashton, Drew Edwards and Kalean DalMolin made some awesome runs.
Tries Scored for the Broncos went to Marcus Ashton (2) and Drew Edwards (1) with Drew Edwards and Quade Bloor kicking (1) goal each.
In the Under 9s consolation final the Storm defeated the Warriors 10-6.
For the Storm this was a terrific game of football, both teams were outstanding.
Defence was awesome, Nic Powderly, Ollie McColl, Ali Khdor, Adam Khdor made some fantastic tackles. Zachary Baxter, Zachary Shepard, Tyler Hambrook and Jack Apps made some good runs. Great dummy half work by Riley Powderly and Max Jones at first receiver.
Tries scored for the Storm went to Max Jones (1) and Tyler Hambrook (1) with Max Jones converting his try.
In the main Under 11s Grand Final the Roosters took on the Knights.
In the final minutes, the Knight won 18-10.
This game was the highlight of the day!
For the Roosters this was a fantastic performance by all the boys! All the boys were pumped and ready for a great game of footy.
The Roosters really dug deep in this game after losing Jack early in the game due to injury, but this didn’t stop the boys getting first points on the board through Harvey McGregor.
The game then went from end to end with Zayden Khodr, Brodie Apps and Declan Cashell pulling off some big hits in defence. Matt Noakes was once again dominant in attack with DJ Smith awesome in attack and defence. Little man Abe Forbutt really stood up this game and put in to help stop the big opposition rolling through the middle.
With the Knights just getting on top late in the match it was a massive effort and one that their coach was extremely proud of.
Young too strong for neighbouring towns
The Under 10s match was a top-of-the-table clash with first versus third on the ladder.
Young got off to a great start with Corey Lucas scoring and Lochie Pratt converting to put them in front 6-nil.
Gundagai then hit back to make it 6-4 before Lochie Pratt chased his own kick to win the chase to the ball right on half time, with Brock Sing converting to lead 12-4.
After the break Gundagai had plenty of ball and field position and scored three more tries to run out winners 18-12.
It was a great game by everyone but a few missed tackles were very costly.
This week we take on Brothers at home in the final round and I’m sure the boys are up for the challenge before heading into the finals series.
A big thank you to Max Jones and Sam Steed for playing up a grade, you guys were fantastic.
In perfect football conditions the Young Services Club Under 11s had a fantastic win at Gundagai.
Young’s defence was the highlight of the match with their relentless pressure without the ball.
Will Steed, Mitchell Prest, Harvey Mcgreggor and Riley Brownlie were in everything.
This led the way for our halves Charlie Corcoran and Matt Noakes to play some footy using the outside backs.
Scores were locked at 12-12 until the last few minutes when a brilliant chip chase regathering and offload by M Noakes led to J Simpson racing 30m to score. His second for the day.
M Noakes got the other try and a goal with L Jewitt and R Brownlie kicking the goals.
This was a great squad effort and it’s what the boys have been building towards all season.
The Under 15s Cherrypickers defeated Wagga Brothers 22-6 at Kieth Cullen Oval.
Young’s try scorers were Jake Baker, Will Quinn along with two tries by Pat Smith, Pat also kicked three goals from four attempts.
Young’s try scorers were strong players along with Braigon Forde and Blake Bailey.
The win secured a semi final birth but still need to defeat Gundagai this weekend and rely on Wagga Brothers to upset Turvey Park in order to have a home ground advantage in the elimination semi.
Young Junior Rugby League play this Saturday morning.
Matches will commence from 9.30am at Cullen Oval.
Under 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s will each have two matches. That is a good way to finish as this is the last week of football for all of these teams.
Non-competitive ages do not participate in semi final football.
Our Under 16 league tag girls play the first match of the day. And our 13 tag team play the last in a quirk of the draw.
Sadly, Brothers don’t have a 10s tag team and this age will miss out on a game.
Our Under 10 tag team have been amazing all year and I can’t wait to see the girls back next year.
All other teams have a game except for Under 15s who have received a forfeit.
All players and families are welcome at the Services Club on Saturday night when we hold our presentation and barbecue from 5pm.
We have been getting good numbers back for presentations and there has been a real family atmosphere with kids running around eating sausage sandwiches and parents sharing a meal.
Senior football is also at Alfred Oval on Saturday and there will be a real Cherrypicker atmosphere at the club on Saturday evening with presentations from both clubs.
It will be great and I encourage you all to come and share the fun.
Good luck to all teams on the weekend..
