Well it’s going to happen on Saturday, September 6 at the Young Visitor Information Centre when radio presenter Wes Heather is taking the challenge to a whole new level.
He’s looking for 100 people who’d be willing to pay $100 to throw an ice bucket over his head to raise $10,000 for Motor Neurone Disease.
The amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) ice bucket challenge has become a worldwide sensation, with $30 million already raised.
Wes said it was so popular, he’d be silly not to get involved.
“It’s better than donating just $100,” he said.
The overwhelming part so far has been the willingness of local people to sign up.
Seventeen people had already registered within hours of Wes’s challenge being announcing on Monday morning radio.
By midday yesterday 42 people had signed up.
And, as of 4.20pm yesterday, Wes has 60 people – and $6000.
“I’ve got two weeks to raise $10,000 and I’m past halfway already!” Wes said yesterday.
Seven local businesses have contributed between $500 to $700.
Mellross Homes leads the charge at $700 while Sheehan Sunnyside Bakery, South West Slopes Credit Union, Gary’s Gourmet Meats, Terry Bros Carpet Court, the Australian Hotel and Watson Toyota have all put their hand up to get involved with $500 each.
Wes’s cause has also attracted the attention of WIN News and Channel Nine National News.
“You either love me or you hate me. I know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, I am okay with that!” Wes said.
“But I will go out of my way and help people if I believe in it – so if you love me, support me.
“If you hate me, why not pay $100 to throw a bucket over my head. Either way, it’s for a great cause, it’s a win, win.”
You can help Wes by going to his Facebook page ‘Wes’s Fundraising Events’, like it and inbox him with your name, details and how many buckets you’d like to buy.
