The test, performed by Roads and Maintenance Authority, measures the deflection of a flexible pavement under moving wheel loads.
A simple device that operates on the lever arm principle, the Benkelman Beam is used with a loaded truck.
Measurement is made by placing the tip of the beam between the dual tyres and measuring the pavement surface rebound as the truck is moved away.
According to council’s operations director Dirk Wymer standard tonnage is used to test how much the road pavement moves under the axle.
The tests took place on Saturday afternoon and Sunday ahead of planned hot mix overlay works in Boorowa, Lovell and Elizabeth streets.
Young Shire Council provided the traffic control measures.
