Just 45 games into his NRL career, the 21-year-old has already filled every back-line position except halfback, and coach Ricky Stuart said it was still "trial and error" to find his best spot.

Given his versatility, Wighton admitted his role next season could be determined by Raiders' recruitment. Canberra is still hunting for a marquee replacement at fullback for Anthony Milford. Manly's Brett Stewart is on Canberra's radar, while the club is also monitoring whether there will be any fallout from Brisbane's salary cap situation, given the Broncos boast fullbacks Milford, Ben Barba and Josh Hoffman on their books for next year.

Wighton said he was happy to "go with the flow", but would prefer to settle and specialise on one position, nominating centre as his most comfortable spot.

He will play only his second NRL match at fullback against Wests Tigers on Saturday. But the Jack of all trades admitted he enjoyed fullback last weekend and was confident he could master No.1 given time.

"I'm still trying to find my spot I guess," Wighton said. "I wouldn't mind being able to settle into a position so I can learn a role and get better at it, but also it's good to learn different positions for the future.

"Centre has been my main role this year, so that's my preferred role, but if I can learn the role of fullback a bit better then that's always an option for the future.

"It depends on recruitment, the coach and what plans he's got for the team as to where people will play. I'll see where I end up.

"I haven't had many words with [Stuart], he said it's a bit of trial and error the role there. I guess if I can keep trying to learn [fullback] there's no reason why I couldn't stay there in the future."

Although Wighton has represented NSW Country twice at centre, Stuart said his preference was to see him as a long-term fullback or five-eighth. Although Wighton struggled at six in the first nine games of the season, he said the switch had benefited his overall game.

"I was a little bit wobbly this year at six so I guess the future will only tell," Wighton said.

"It helped my game awareness a lot, your mind's a lot busier when you're in the halves directing the whole team around. When I got chucked back into centre it really helped me see the game a bit better because things were a bit slower."

While Wighton picked Milford's brain for fullback advice, he said the biggest adaptation was the extra fitness required.

"I have to get my fitness up because I'm a little bit behind the eight-ball sometimes ... it's a little bit like a five-eighth on the roam," Wighton said.

"I was gassed in the first half, I was out on my feet, a little bit of training behind me and I'll be all right. It's a different job, you've always got to be on the ball, telling people where to go and moving where the ball goes."

Former Raiders skipper and fullback Clinton Schifcofske felt Wighton's rotation would not be detrimental to his development. Schifcofske rated Jordan Rapana's return to the NRL at fullback strongly, giving the Raiders options next season.

"Everyone likes to have a position and be settled ... if you're that talented and versatile, you're used as a stop-gap sometimes," Schifcofske said.

"The good fullbacks these days can run and pass and kick, they do it all. I'm sure Jack's time at five-eighth would have helped a little bit with that.

"He's a running-type player which will definitely suit him at fullback, but he's a good centre as well. He's quite versatile, it's a good problem for Ricky to have."
