The village hosts, through their Volunteers In Partnership (VIP) program, three high teas a year with Monday’s special ballroom dancing theme the final one for 2014.

The volunteers organise a different theme every time, saving the best until last.

Between 85 and 90 residents and guests gathered in the Catherin McAuley Centre to witness some ballroom dancing from the Young Services Club Dance Group and sip on tea and treats in a ballroom-like set up.

Residents came from both the village’s living apartments and their external self-managed apartments.

Helen said residents were so taken by the music and ballroom dancing they “were reduced to tears”.

“Because of the beautiful music and how it brought back so many memories,” she said.

Some residents were even given the opportunity to have a dance with some of the dancers who gave their time to perform this week.

There were smiles that just couldn’t be wiped from their faces that morning.

“That’s what it’s all about – how they enjoyed life. And it’s keeping the community connected with the residents.”

Helen also praised the delicious food made and prepared by the village’s kitchen staff.

Volunteers will begin planning for their next high tea – and first one for 2015 – at their next VIP meeting.

“They (the residents) get great enjoyment out of this,” Helen said.

“The Southern Cross Village management are so supportive of what the volunteers do and the volunteers appreciate their contribution to the event.”
