Mary had a little la... wait, what? Twin lambs are a common sighting among a flock of sheep, triplets are as well, but how many times have you seen a ewe mother quadruplets? Well a local couple got quite the surprise after discovering a 12-month-old ewe in their small flock of sheep had given birth to four healthy little lambs last week.

Growth stunted: A Murringo organic chicken producer said the joint NSW and Federal  government’s decision to buy back water on the lower Murrumbidgee flood plains has led to a shortage of organically grown grain, halting industry expansion. Council approved the development application of Angus Dowling’s company, Enviroganic on Wednesday which would see the farm’s capacity almost tripled. But Mr Dowling said the approved capacity, up from 48,000 to 120,000 birds, could not be achieved in the near future because of a drastic undersupply of grain. 

Festival launched: The 2014 Cherry Queen entrants, sponsors and supporters of Young’s 65th National Cherry Festival gathered Thursday night for the official launch of the town’s major event.

Hugh’s tales of high adventure: Former Greenthorpe man Hugh ‘Obi’ O’Brien will take centre stage at Young’s Art of Espresso tonight to launch his memoir Undaunted. He reveals the painful transition from military life to his days risking ‘spaghettification’ on underwater construction projects to private security work – pirate-hunting in the Red Sea and tearing along the world’s most dangerous roads in the Middle East.


Boy in scooter accident: A 14-year-old boy broke his leg when he fell off his scooter on his way to school on Friday morning.

WWI machine gun stolen: A World War I machine gun has been stolen from the Wallendbeen Memorial Hall earlier this week.

Book Week: To kick off the ‘reading at recess’ component of St Mary’s Primary School’s Book Week celebrations last Monday was Mayor Stuart Freudenstein. He read Where are you, banana? by Sofie Laguna and illustrated by Craig Smith. 

Book Week: Tuesday saw the very animated Father Tom Thornton read to students in the library, taking a very prominent seat on the front counter. Fr Tom is St Mary's parish priest and he read Top Dog by Rod Clement. Fr Tom is also a talented artist and was drawing for students as well.

Book Week: Young Police Sergeant Kristin Marshall made the trip to St Mary’s on Wednesday to read The Naked Penguin by Kym Lardner.

Book Week: And last but certainly not least was the appearance from one of our town’s sporting stars, Young Cherrypickers captain-coach Luke Branighan. Luke read The Very Itchy Bear by Nick Bland on Friday as students gathered around him in their PJs.

Moppity wine the “future of winemaking”: A big risk has paid off for Moppity Vineyards, who took out top honours in the red wine category at the Cowra Wine Show with their 2013 Moppity eclipse Shiraz – the first high-end wine they have produced. Cheques: Young Shire Council has distributed the $26,386 they approved at their May monthly meeting to the 26 Young community groups. Among them, Young mayor Stuart Freudenstein presented a $2000 cheque to RDA secretary Trudy Morgan and president Margaret Pestell.

Low on players, big on results: Young High School’s eight-man touch football team consisting of (back, left to right) Matt Murray, Luke Doldissen, Harry Dunn, Angus Ross, Josh Reynolds, Jacob Lucas and (front, left to right) Nathan Anderson and Joel McKenzie have returned home from Gosford after placing among the top eight touch football teams in the state.

Riverina girls worthy recipients : YOUNG North Public School’s Mollie Hogan and Mili Felix-Vonarx are in the spotlight yet again after being selected to represent the Riverina in the girls soccer squad.
This time they are being recognised for the achievement by the Young Sports Advisory Committee in the form of the May and June sports awards.

Young North gets a taste of Riverina: Year 5 and 6 students from Young North Public School (back) Georgia Hill, Jessica Dreverman, Shannae Hannan, Jenna St Clair, Hannah Barrett, coach Amanda Nicolls, (middle) Lauren Milne, Mili Felix-Vonarx, Mollie Hogan, Brigette Dawe and (front) Ella Nicolls just missed out on becoming Riverina netball champions after playing in the Riverina finals against Tumut on Tuesday, August 12.

Wes’s icy challenge: Young radio presenter Wes Heather is taking the ice bucket challenge to a whole new level by calling for 100 people who’d be willing to pay $100 to throw an ice bucket over his head to raise $10,000 for Motor Neurone Disease. He's up to 73 buckts so far.

Colin’s joy at benevolent strangers: A good outcome rarely comes of a callous theft. But Colin Edgar can say the opposite, after three strangers from opposite ends of the state rallied together to donate and deliver him a second-hand scooter this week. Two of his mobility scooters were stolen from his home two weeks ago.

Test paves the way for new surfaces: MOTORISTS manoeuvering around Young at the weekend were given the opportunity to see a Benkelman Beam Test in action. The test, performed by Roads and Maintenance Authority, measures the deflection of a flexible pavement under moving wheel loads. 

Special Olympians: Living with Down’s Syndrome can have its challenges, but it hasn’t held back two talented sportspeople from reaching an elite level of competition. Former Bellhaven Special School students and Young locals Catharine Keir and Joe Maloney will head to Melbourne in October to take part in the 2014 Special Olympics National Games in yachting and golf.

Local man a world champion: Local man Peter Shepherd can tick being a World Cup holder off his list of things to do after representing Australia in the Veterans Hockey World Cup.

Charity ride rolls through Young: IF you happened to see Ronald McDonald pedal through Young in his lycra suit on Monday afternoon, you weren’t going crazy.
He was part of an 18-man group who began an 800km journey from Wagga to Sydney as part of a charity ride, raising funds and awareness for the Ronald McDonald House in Wagga, Canberra and Orange.

Gone but not forgotten: It is one year since Corey Power was found fatally injured beside the road in Wombat Street by a passerby. The father of one, brutally bashed beyond recognition, died of the injuries he sustained in the attack.

It’s been a year since the brutal murder of Corey Power rocked Young, but for his family, time has healed few wounds. Answers and closure lie behind a wall of red tape, as progress in the case against the man wanted for his murder rests in the hands of the Queensland Government. Corey Power was many things to Kirsten Nasser - from a big brother, to a father and best friend.  To honour the man who had such an impact on her life, she decided only a lasting tribute - in the form of a tattoo portrait - would do him justice.


Highway blocked by fallen tree: Local farmers and onlookers came to the aid of the highway patrol yesterday to help clear the road of a large tree trunk which had brought traffic to a halt on the Olympic Highway. Police said traffic was brought to a standstill about 2km north of Fontenoy, near Wallendbeen for about 90 minutes.

Missing scooters found by police: Colin Edgar's two mobility scooters - stolen during what police described as a callous robbery in Young - have been found trashed.

Residents dance afternoon away: “We went out with a bang” – that’s how organiser Helen Waugh described the Southern Cross Young Retirement Village’s last high tea event for the year on Monday. Ballroom dancers were the main feature to entertain the residents.

30 years and counting: Young Regional School of Music (YRSM) has proudly provided music services to Young and its district since 1984. Their special celebrations marked down for Saturday, September 6 are edging closer and they're inviting the whole community to be part of it all. Australian rep: FROM a small town rugby union club to the Australian School Boys rugby union side; it’s safe to say Young’s Angus Crichton (pictured) is steadily working his way up the ranks. The former Young Public School student - now 18 years old - was selected for the side after playing in the Scots College First XV side. 

Romano’s Cup showdown: The end of the 2014 season has brought with it exciting times for Young’s Under 17s rugby union team who are getting ready to head to Tasmania for an end-of-season tour.
 But first, the grand final. The Under 17s will head to Conelly Park in Wagga tomorrow where they will come head-to-head with Wagga City in what is expected to be an exciting match. Tagging queens get the upper hand on Cherryatrics: Tumut had forfeited their game against the Cherryettes at the weekend and as a result the girls were able to participate in a match against the Cherryatrics.
