Along with hundreds of other students at Champagnat Catholic College, Pagewood, 13-year-old Logan has handed in his old boots for a special cause.

Boots for Kids is a campaign asking Fairfax Media readers to donate footy boots at the end of the season, so we can get them to indigenous children in rural and remote areas who have none.

Readers can donate their children's boots, their own, or buy a pair and deposit the boots in bins located in Coles supermarkets across NSW and Victoria. They will be collected by Linfox and, after being cleaned up and paired with some socks, trucked to the communities in need.

For Logan, digging out his old boots for a fellow footy fan was a no-brainer.

"I want to help these kids because they are less fortunate," he said.

"I think it gives kids a chance to finally wear proper shoes and not run around in bare feet. It's important because we're so lucky to have all that we have."

Michael Newman, 15, is one of the year nine students who took charge in directing the boots collection at Champagnat College.

He said the initiative was about acknowledging the inequalities suffered by remote indigenous communities.

"We need to change how it is in Australia," he said. "Some places are really fortunate to be able to have boots and play in organised competitions, but in other places there is nothing like that."

Michael said the prospect of another teen stepping into his boots is exciting.

"It makes me feel happy because they will feel happy," he said.

Champagnat College has one of the highest intakes of indigenous students among Catholic boys schools in the Sydney archdiocese.

Many of its indigenous students are from Redfern, Waterloo, La Perouse and Botany.

Students regularly engage with the community in indigenous cultural activities and participate in the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience.

Middle-school learning co-ordinator Mark Heiss said the Boots for Kids goal to collect 200 pairs of shoes has united students from years 7 to 10.

"It has brought out self-determination and a bit of drive," Mr Heiss said. "They're taking ownership of a program like this for their own people."

Michael said he hopes whoever happens to land in his old boots has fun with them.

"Use them as much as you can until they rip apart," he said. "And if not pass them down to another person, keep the cycle going."

He is already looking ahead to the possibility of bigger projects to collect and donate jerseys and shorts.
