A crowd of about 250 people gathered beneath the big cherries at the Young Visitor Information Centre at 12.30pm to witness 100 people dump 100 ice buckets over the Young radio presenter’s head.
Paramedics were on stand-by as Wes took a break every 20 buckets.
Wes said it took him half an hour to get through them all, adding that the first 20 began to nerve him.
Bucket 100 – the grand finale – ended up being an 80 litre tub containing four bags of ice – the equivalent to eight buckts, tossed over Wes’ head by a staff member from South West Welding and Fabrication with the assistance of Young firefighters.
But unexpectedly, once the challenge was announced complete and community members applauded the efforts, Wes didn’t stop there.
His bestie – as he calls her – Amy Newcombe from Cowra was running late and had previously purchased one bucket for herself two for the Young Vet Clinic, which were thrown for her in her absence.
When she finally arrived Wes agreed to take one more bucket, another 80 litre, taking the tally to 101 so she could have her turn.
“The adrenaline kept me going. We decided before the challenge for me to have a break every 20 buckets. Thank God we did because it hurt so much,” he said.
Local Simon Apps filmed all the action and plans to have the video uploaded on YouTube by Friday.
In total Wes has raised $10,400.
“I’d love to thank everyone who supported me and people’s efforts to get up there on the day,” Wes said.
“If I was up there on my own I probably wouldn’t have gone through with it... it was hard but I’m glad I did it. It means lots to me.”
