FEE-ASCO: Cr Brian Ingram joined Cr Ben Cooper at council's September monthly meeting in fighting to have the new $2.50 entry fee and $120 individual season pass for aged pensioners to access the Young Aquatic Centre reduced to zero, as it had been in the past. Fresh new faces for town’s landmark bridges: The Young Tidy Towns Committee have been busily cleaning the underside to the Sarah Musgrave and Lambing Flat Bridges in a bid to prepare them for a facelift - a mural. End-of-year revellry leaves townspeople furious: YOUNG CBD dwellers were treated to a loud spectacle that lasted almost an hour Friday afternoon as Year 12 students hooned up and down the main street tooting their horns and spraying silly stream over bystanders and cars.

Youth Council urging locals to paint a roo: YOUNG’S Youth Council is introducing a public art competition on a canvas unlike any other. It’s called ‘Paint A Roo’ and that’s exactly what entrants will be doing. Bush focus at Annette’s Place: Every day a group of children from Annette’s Place head down to Monteagle Primary School, simply put, to play in the bush. It’s all part of the centre’s Bush Place Program which seeks to get kids out into nature. It was given special mention when the Department of Education rated the centre as exceeding the national standard - the highest rating - in all areas when they were assessed earlier this year. St Mary’s on the Road to Gundagai: This year music has really taken off at St Mary’s and the school now boasts two choirs, a band and drum corps. Last week in addition to performing at the Spring Fair, the Senior Choir took part in the first ever Western Region Choir Festival at St Patrick’s, Gundagai. Pictured: Mark Brooker leads the group. Smith out-cuts country’s best: YOUNG’S Trent Smith continues to carve out a name for himself in the cutting arena, this time taking out the Reserve Champion ribbon at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) 2014 Victorian Futurity. It was a fitting end to a season of competition for the 28-year-old who has serious competition pedigree having already taken out the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) $2000 Limited Rider World Champion in the United States in 2012.

DRIVER OF THE YEAR: Michael Day Junior was named the Local Trainer and Local Driver of the Year for the 2013-2014 season at a recent Young Harness Racing meeting. He was presented his trophy by club secretary/manager Brian Ingram and committee member Rachael Micallef.  

Wait is over, pool gates open: The wait is over for local swimmers who have been eagerly waiting for the start of the swimming season. The Young Aquatic Centre is ready to open their gates this October long weekend from 10am.

Club achieves 2014 goal: Rugby legend Nick Farr-Jones made a special guest appearance at the Young Yabbies Rugby Union Club’s annual presentation night at the Empire Hotel last Friday night.  Pigeons cause havoc at council: The pigeons that call two of Young’s landmark buildings home have been leaving behind more than just their droppings, Young Shire Council has discovered. They’re also leaving behind a hazardous environment that affects not only human health but that of domestic animals and livestock, according to the company called in to eradicate them.  Pigeons cause havoc at council: Australian Pest Bird Management confirmed that a shocking 45 diseases, some fatal, and some 50 parasites are associated with pigeons. Vital food service opens: For more than a year, a dedicated bunch of locals have been working hard to ease the burden of locals in Young struggling to put food on the table but starting up the town's first Food Hall. Moppity Vineyards a most successful exhibitor: Alecia and Jason Brown of Moppity Vineyards enjoyed extraordinary success at the NSW Small Winemakers Show. Moppity was the most successful exhibitor of the 105 wineries entered, winning three trophies, six gold and 12 other medals, bolstering their growing reputation as one of the top winemakers in Australia.

Long Lazy Lunch: Young’s first Cherry Blossom ‘Long Lunch’ on Sunday proved an idyllic experience with calls already for the event to become an annual attraction. Set amid rows of blossom laden cherry trees in perfect spring weather, the event - that attracted 150 people - proved a big hit and - according to Young’s tourism manager David Newberry - passed all expectations. Young Dressage hosts their first state championships: THE state’s best dressage riders converged on the Bendick Murrell Sportsground this week to take part in the Bamborough Pony Stud 2014 NSW Young Rider and Pony Dressage Championships. In what marks a first for the Young Dressage Association, the local troupe were granted approval to host the state championship event from September 24 to today. Saints reflect on 2014: On Saturday the Young Saints AFL Club held their presentation day at the Young Hotel with a large number of players, supporters and sponsors represented.
