Organisers were quick to hail the event - that attracted a 3000-strong crowd - a “fantastic” success, with smooth running and beautiful spring weather being the main contributors.
Local police were also very happy with the overall behaviour of this year’s racegoers, having only received reports on a domestic dispute at the event and a pub brawl later that night.
Burrangong Picnic Race Club president Anthony Murphy said the day was well organised by a great and hard working committee.
“I’m really fortunate to have a great committee behind me and they’re the reason it was so successful,” he said.
“I’ve had terrific feedback, everyone has been so positive... about the day overall, that we have a great format and the after party was as big as last year.”
Anythony also said he received plenty of comment regarding the club’s first canola crop, planted in the centre of the racecourse.
“People said it was a good initiative,” he said.
It was another tough year for the Fashions on the Field judge and organisers, attracting a high standard of entries.
“It was very hard to select winners,” Fashions on the Field sponsor, Alison Foreman from Label A said.
Canberra milliner Trish McIntyre was this year’s judge, who - according to Alison - had a different judging style than Young was used to.
“Trish looked for more modern fashion, but she also looked at their forward poise, how they walked and held themselves,” Alison said.
This year’s Most Elegant Lady went to local businesswoman Holly Cullen, who wore a fluoro orange and black frock teamed with a matching fascinator and accessories.
The Best Dressed Male was awarded to another local, David Butt, in his quirky red suit jacket, navy blue pants, blue shirt, yellow tie and brown leather shoes.
Young Racegoer (16-25 years) for 2014 was Georgia Brill while the Fillies category was won by Annabella Taylor.
Best Hat went to Pricilla Edgerton and the winners of the Best Dressed Couple must have been busy celebrating their win and forgot to report back to the judges with their names.
“I thought it (the fashion) was fantastic,” judge Trish said.
Trish - who has seen her fair share of judging races in Victoria, said many would have fit in perfectly at the Flemington spring races.
“People put a lot of thought into their outfits... and some of the men outshone some of the women.”
Young radio announcer Wes Heather was another to praise the response of the town at the races, particularly those who purchased a ticket into his Lifeline marquee.
Wes has been passionately raising money and awareness for Lifeline for the last three years, with this year being the second time he’s hosted a marquee at the races.
Lifeline has been a charity close to Wes’ heart after his older brother suffered depression and committed suicide 12 years ago at the age of 25.
He said his event was a bigger success and ran a lot more smoothly compared to last year, attracting a sell-out 160 ticket holders.
“Last year was a learning experience... this year the atmosphere was electric, it was amazing,” he said.
“Everyone had such kind words and had a good time.”
His highlight was the amount of awareness raised for Lifeline and how his family and closest friends were by his side.
“Anthony (club president) mentioned to me what a success it was and suggested next year to go bigger, have another section and sell more tickets,” he said.
“All of my family were there, that made the day more special - knowing that this was inspired by my brother... and having [my bestie] Amy by my side all day just topped it off.”
Wes’ best mate, Robert Craig, also drove six hours from the Central Coast on Thursday night to be in Young by Friday to help him set up.
“On behalf of myself and Lifeline I want to thank the community for getting behind yet another of my charity fundraisers. I want to thank them very much for being part of the event, it wouldn’t have been a success without them,” he said.
“Also a special thanks to all of my sponsers including Grove Estate Wines for the bar and my three staff members Corinne Jones, Michael Spencer and Nikki Malone.”
