Cherryatrics president, Steve Woolford said the committee are pleased with the response from the public.
“We have been impressed with the enthusiasm of the four new sides participating, especially Murringo, who will field two sides (Mongrels and Dingoes), Moss Vale and Orange Pirates and welcome them to our carnival,” he said.
“We will also have teams travelling from Wagga, Boorowa, Forbes, Grenfell, Wollongong, South Coast, Wollongong, Canberra, Yass and Adelong, plus the local teams from Yabbies, Monteagle, Koorawatha, along with the Cherryatrics.
“The economic benefit to the town of Young is significant, with over 400 players and officials descending on the town, filling up accommodation, eating at our food outlets and enjoying the patronage of our hotels and is estimated to be worth in the order of 250k.”
Mr Woolford would also like to remind everyone that the weekend marks the first ever ARL Masters City versus Masters Country representative game, selected by the participating teams, that will be played on Sunday, October 19 at around 10.20am.
“This representative game has really surpassed our expectations and the level of anticipation and excitement it has generated has blown us away and will become a regular event at our carnival,” Mr Woolford said.
The Masters Carnival committee have been advised that one of the players in a new team is going to play his first ever game of league. He is also challenged with Cerebral Palsy.
The player was quoted as saying, “Cerebral Palsy can kiss my a**, as I’m going out as one of the boys and I’m going to give it everything I’ve got and what my legs can’t do my heart will.”
Event organiser Geoff Hill explained that this typifies the Masters spirit and the wonderful attitude that all participants bring along.
“We wish him all the very best,” Mr Hill said.
He went on to say the carnival could not operate without the great support of their sponsors - The Young Services Club, the Empire Hotel, South West Slopes Credit Union, South West Tractors / New Holland, Great Eastern Hotel, Delta Agribusiness, Sutherlands Welding and Fabrication, and PJs Fast Food, Sportspower, Young Smash Repairs, Donges Supa IGA, Terry Bros Carpet Court, Milnes Country style Meats, Tooheys and Schweppes.
“The draw is available on our website, so please find out when your side is playing and come on down to look at these former players having some fun,” Hill said.
Games are set to kick off at 9am both days. To keep up-to-date, also like the Cherryatrics on Facebook.
