Why? It was the Young and District Family History Group’s first antique and collectables appraisal day.
And such was its success, they’re thinking of making it an annual event.
Organisers, who hosted the day between 10am and 4pm, counted 40 people who registered 132 small items only for appraisal by long-time collector Denis Quinn from Cowra and jewellery expert Heather Davidson from Canowindra.
Rowie Griffiths, who manned the register, said they were worried they were going to run out of time if any more people walked through the door.
On average residents were bringing down three items each so those who trickled through the door after 1pm had up to an hour and a half wait.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever done this… it’s a fundraiser for the Young and District Family History Group,” fellow organiser Carmel Price said.
“We’re quite pleased with it, we might make this a yearly event.”
But Carmel added they may approach their next event a little differently.
This year, antique collectors waited in a gallery while one-by- one Denis and Heather appraised each item privately.
Next time Carmel said she’d love to set the event up much like an antiques roadshow, where people can sit in and listen.
“It’s all interesting, it’s information everyone likes to hear,” she said.
While most weren’t given dollar values on their old treasures, almost all walked away their curiosity quenched and a little more learned about objects that had been in their family for generations - information they can now pass down to future generations.
