A 76-year-old woman backed her white Mazda 626 into the Boorowa Street pharmacy at about 9.35am.
Pharmacy assistant Lisa Northover had to run for cover when the car came to a halt just two feet away from her.
“I was standing right at the closest checkout and had just finished a phone call and I heard a car revving, a “thunk” as it hit the gutter, saw it coming my way and I thought this car is not going to stop so I just ran and screamed,” she said.
Fortunately she was the only person up the front of the store at the time of the incident.
“It was either a heart starter or a heart stopper - I’m not sure,” she said.
Police, ambulance and Young Fire and Rescue were on the scene soon after.
The driver was able to extricate herself from the car.
Young Fire and Rescue captain Don Smyth said firefighters were able to easily remove the car from the window, before making sure the road was safe for drivers and pedestrians.
Traffic was temporarily affected with council workers directing drivers.
Young Ambulance Inspector Stephen Pollard said the 76-year-old female driver came away unscathed but was transported to Young District Hospital for further assessment.
Cootamundra LAC crime co-ordinator Senior Constable Michael Wood said the woman’s foot slipped, hitting the accelerator causing the vehicle to mount the gutter, cross the footpath and collide with the chemist.
A breath test conducted returned a negative reading.
“Enquiries are continuing before police decide what action to take,” he said.
