Twelve locals, including Day, were among the 57 open teams of four and 14 junior teams of four who competed in the finals at Temora Showground on Saturday and Sunday.
Day, Darcy Brewer, Chris and Elise Bunny, Owen Parker, Lisa Luff, Anna Hayes, Bec Pearce and Sondra Lehane and her daughters Kate, Jane and Grace (in the juniors) added to the total 284 competitors from around the state who descended on the arena.
Sue Leihtner and Norm Bourlet from Harden also competed.
The finals were the culmination of a year’s point-based competition, with the major titles being awarded to the highest point rider for the weekend, high point open rider for the year and runner-up, high point lady and runner-up, and high point junior and runner-up.
The crowning glory this weekend was the saddle for the event’s highest point scorer, won by Day.
But it was no easy win for the Young Shire farmer, who at one stage was locked in a three-way tie on points with fellow local Darcy Brewer from Thuddungra and his mother Jeanette Brewer from Tumbarumba.
The trio were sent into a three-way run-off, with Day and his team coming out on top.
“William and his team penned them in the quickest time,” NSW Team Yarders finals representative Rosheen O'Brien said.
“We don’t know the times because we left it a surprise.”
The remaining results for the weekend included high point open series winner for the year going to Temora man Rod Bourlet.
Open lady high point series winner was Anita Withers from Temora, and runner-up Rozzie Stephens from Wagga.
High point junior series winner was Jake Bourlet from Temora, and high point junior for the weekend was Trent Bourlet from Temora.
“It was an excellent weekend of competition in a relaxed family atmosphere,” Rosheen said.
She also wanted to thank Day and his brother John Day for donating their cattle for the weekend’s events.
“If we didn’t have the cattle, we’d have no competition,” she said.
“They’re (the Day brothers) very good supporters.”
The NSW Team Yarders would also like to thank Mogga from Mogga's Marquees and Party Hire in Young for donating his juke box to entertain young and old alike for the weekend.
Thanks also go to Ambos Stockfeeds in Young for donating 45 bags of feed as prizes for winners, and Young Vet Clinic and Giddy Up Gags and Bits, also supplying prizes.
