Young police were deployed on Wednesday afternoon to keep tabs on an allegedly stolen vehicle travelling at excessive speeds which had evaded authorities through Victoria and NSW.
Young police Inspector Ashley Holmes said police were initially alerted to the speeding vehicle about 10.50am in Benalla, Victoria.
The gold Nissan X-Trail with Queensland number plates made its way to Wagga where it was involved in a pursuit.
At times the vehicle- containing two to three people -crossed over to the wrong side and clocked speeds exceeding 170km/h.
He said a number of items were thrown out the car, including a cash box.
Inspector Holmes said police ended their pursuit on Morong Street, Wagga about 2pm due to safety concerns, before the vehicle used the Coolamon Road to escape.
Inspector Holmes said police kept track of the vehicle using sightings.
It was soon apparent the vehicle was travelling north towards Temora where it passed through the town and then headed east.
"At one stage it was going towards Young on the Milvale Road," he said.
Three police vehicles from Young were deployed to Milvale Road but the X-Trail turned left towards Grenfell.
Spikes were considered as a tyre deflation device but that option was later rejected.
Inspector Holmes said the car was sighted by Grenfell police as it moved through the town and headed east towards Cowra.
It was sighted enroute by Greenethorpe police.
The last report available was that the police helicopter had been deployed to follow the car.
Inspector Holmes said police believed the occupants of the car had committed a series of offences between Victoria and NSW, including theft of petrol.

Police were alerted to the speeding vehicle about 10.45am in Benalla, Victoria.
It has since evaded authorities through multiple jurisdictions.
In the past hour the vehicle containing two, possibly three passengers, has travelled through Temora, was heading towards Young before turning north to Grenfell.
It passed through Grenfell and was heading towards Cowra before turning south at the Olympic Highway towards Young.
Police said people needed to be aware of the operation.

Wagga police terminated a pursuit of the gold Nissan X-Trail on Wednesday afternoon.
Police ended their pursuit on Morong Street about 2pm before the vehicle used the Coolamon Road to escape.
The vehicle is alleged to have hit speeds of up to 200 km/h on the Hume Highway.
