Ten junior Young Tennis Club members experienced life on the tennis circuit during the recent spring school holidays.
These included Mili Felix-Vonarx (Young), Monique Dorman (Young), Savanah Gillies (Bowral), Ruby Glover (Young), Rhyan Heinzel (Wagga Wagga), Lauren McLennan (Narrandera), Anne Meares (Goulburn), Kate Officer (Cootamundra), Grace Ramsay ( Tumut) and Luka Ruwette (Griffith).
“These players were a delight to travel with, producing many a nail biting match,” Lynne said.
“Their behaviour, sportsmanship and awareness of others, both on and off the court is a credit to their parents and coaches.”
‘Gus’ - the affectionately named team bus - took them on a 14 day tour of the north island of New Zealand.
It was a whirlwind of airports, flying, training and playing tennis, new friends, interesting card games, swimming, cooking, washing, a lot of grocery shopping, sightseeing, sleepless nights (due to tennis commitments) and a massive amount of photos (just in case we weren’t all looking the same way) that filled their two week schedule.
Monique Dorman proved she was there for all the right reasons, making her NZ opposition on the court earn their every point.
Monique played the finals of the Under 14 girls’ doubles consolation in Waikato and was a semi finalist in the Under 16 girls’ singles consolation.
Lynne said Monique played extremely well in the Under 14 girls at both the Wilson Waikato Junior Championships and the Auckland Junior Spring Championships.
Ruby Glover proved she was a worthy opponent on the court, winning the Plate Draw in the Under 12 girls’ singles in Auckland.
Ruby partnered Kate Officer to win the finals of the girls’ doubles consolation in Waikato.
“A fabulous achievement for a young player so new to the game,” Lynne said.
Mili Felix-Vonarx partnered Savanah Gillies in the finals Under 12 girls’ doubles.
Mili was a semi finalist in the Under 12 girls’ singles in Hamilton (seeded three for the tournament).
Kate Officer was a semi finalist in the Under 12 girls’ consolation in Hamilton.
Savanah Gillies won the Under 12 Girls’ Plate in Auckland as well as in Waikato.
Grace Ramsay was a semi finalist in the Under 16 girls’ singles in Hamilton and a finalist in the Under 16 girls’ consolation.
Anne Meares was a quarter finalist in the Under 16 girls’singles main draw and played the finals of the Under 16 Girls’ Plate.
“It’s a great effort since Anne has been carrying some injuries,” Lynne said.
Both Young boys met some very strong opponents.
Congratulations to Luka Ruwette who was a semi finalist in the Under 14 Plate Draw in Waikato.
Congratulations to Rhyan who was a semi finalist in the Under 16 boys’ doubles at the same tournament.
