NSW police are appealing for the public’s assistance to locate the car - a gold Nissan X-Trail with Queensland registration plates 555RCX - which was last sighted Wednesday afternoon near Canowindra.
NSW Police said the car was stolen during an aggravated break and enter in Queensland sometime between 11pm on October 26 and 5.30am the next day.
Young Police Inspector Ashley Holmes said police were initially alerted to the speeding X-Trail about 10.50am in Benalla, Victoria.
About 12.30pm the X-Trail was spotted near Albury and was pursued for a short time by Albury Highway Patrol before it was terminated near Holbrook for safety reasons.
The 4WD with Queensland number plates made its way to Wagga where it was involved in another pursuit.
At times the vehicle - containing two to three people - crossed over to the wrong side and clocked speeds up to 200km/h.
Police said a number of items were thrown out the car - including a cash box - which have been seized and will be forensically examined.
The pursuit was terminated for safety reasons as the car entered residential areas in Wagga.
Police then relied on sightings of the car by members of the public after a description of it was broadcast through media outlets.
It was soon apparent the vehicle was travelling north towards Temora where it passed through the town and then headed east.
“At one stage it was going towards Young on the Milvale Road,” Inspector Holmes said.
Three police vehicles from Young were deployed to Milvale Road but the X-Trail turned left towards Grenfell.
Spikes were considered as a tyre deflation device but that option was later rejected.
Inspector Holmes said the car was sighted by Grenfell police as it moved through the town and headed east towards Cowra.
It was then sighted enroute by Greenethorpe police.
Polair - the police helicopter that assists ground crews - was called in at about 4pm.
The last confirmed sighting of the car was near Canowindra where patrols were made of the area but the vehicle was not located.
Inspector Holmes said police believed the occupants of the car had committed a series of offences between Victoria and NSW, including theft of petrol.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/
