Fire destroys historic pavilion: A deliberately lit fire tore through part of Young Showground’s main pavilion Sunday morning destroying historic trophies and memorabilia, just days before CCTV was due to be installed to heighten security at the facility. Photo: Daniella White

Believed to have been deliberately lit: Young Fire and Rescue NSW captain Don Smyth said the fire in the main pavilion at the Young Showground was being treated as deliberately lit and was under investigation. A crime scene was established around the heritage-listed building and police were investigating the circumstances around the fire throughout the day.


Terry and his tuba visit Young: Terry Jacobsen from Wondai, Queensland is fascinated with rotundas. So much so, the retiree is letting the wind take him to rotundas, where he sits and plays his tuba, in whichever town he sets foot in while travelling home from Melbourne. He stopped in at the 1910 rotunda in Carrington Park in Young and also visited the Young Visitor Information Centre.

Mustard crop looms large in first year: It’s not often Paul Parker will tell you a tale of the unexpected - but right now he is. A district agronomist for 45 years Paul has just about seen it all - until he drove out to take a look at Chris Holland’s mustard crop. Thanks to the care Blairs: FOR the past eight years, the Blair family have been regular volunteers at Southern Cross Cinema. So there is every chance, at some stage, you would have bumped into Derek and Kelly or one of their children – Katie, Chloe, Hannah - or nephew Nathan. It's why they've been named the cinema's Volunteers of the Month.

Rabbitohs sign Crichton: And league it is for Young’s Angus Crichton who will don the red and green of the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2015. The NRL premiers have scored one back against rugby union - after losing English playmaker Sam Burgess to the sport - and upset their archrivals the Roosters by signing Crichton to a two-year deal starting next year. Pat Rafter comes to Young: The Young Tennis Club had an unexpected visitor of late. Maybe not the real thing but a life size replica of Pat Rafter, who needed a home after its previous owner in Wollongong passed away from cancer.

Fuller to return: The Queensland Attorney-General has approved the prisoner transfer request of the man wanted in connection to the August 2013 murder of Corey Power (pictured with his daughter) in Young. A spokesperson for the attorney-general said the extradition process was in its final stage, with the suspect Owen Junior Fuller expected to face Brisbane Magistrates Court “shortly”.

The day the muscle came to town: Fifty-two cars that once zoomed the tracks of Bathurst between 1963 and 1977 cruised into Young last Monday for lunch as part of the Aussie Muscle Car Run for the Leukaemia Foundation. Cockburn’s campaign launch: Campaigning for driveway safety has had local couple Peter (pictured) and Emma Cockburn rubbing shoulders with television personality Scott Cam. The Cockburns, representing the Georgina Joesphien Foundation, and Cam recently hosted a media launch in Sydney which also involved NSW Roads minister Duncan Gay and Marg Prendergast from the Centre for Road Safety.

All about the spirit of the game: THE Young and District Netball Association estimated 500 people descended on the Young PCYC courts for its annual Cherry Festival Netball Carnival. Among the players were Marnie Pack from the Yass team the Ga Ga’s  and Chelsea Gumbley from Penrith’s Have A Chats, who raced for the ball during their match on Saturday, November 1.

Effort worthy of a thumbs up: THUMBS UP! This was the rating November monthly medal winners Bob Carnley in B Grade and Steve Sell in A Grade gave for their performances.

Hilltops Shiraz Australia’s best: When Jason Brown first set foot on his Moppity Road vineyard some 10 years ago he set his sights on an award that he felt represented achievement at the highest level in the industry. Last weekend the local vigneron realised that dream when he was presented with the prestigious Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge award for his Moppity Vineyards 2013 Reserve Shiraz. It's also the first win by a NSW wine in the show’s 20 year history. Alecia and Jason Brown were presented their award by Anthony Ciavarella of  Visy Australia.

Young musicians join Riverina tour: If you want to see some of Young’s best musicians on stage - then you can’t miss Riverina Combined Public Schools Band Tour which comes to Young next week. Nine students from Young High School (pictured) have been selected to tour with the Riverina Combined Public Schools Band.

Don hangs up his fire hat: Young NSW Fire and Rescue captain Don Smyth, hung up his helmet and uniform for the last time on Friday, retiring from the service after 40 years - five of which he captained. They’re just wild about Harry: Young schoolboy, Harry Cleverdon, 12, took out a first prize in the Australian National Busking Championships last weekend. Harry placed first in the primary section of the competition held at Cooma, and also placed third overall out of 170 entries in the people’s choice awards.

Will you accept the challenge? In an attempt to improve dwindling participation numbers, the Young Amateur Swimming Club has revamped the Business House Relay Competition. The committee hopes to re-build the competition - now known as the Cherry Splash Challenge that will take to the blocks in just over a week - back into its former glory when it would attract up to 45 teams.

Summer single round underway: The Young Squash Club’s summer single round competition is now underway, with the likes of Geoff Palmer of team Job Centre and Jon Brownlie of team SWSCU among the players. This pair was snapped warming up for their third round match.
