Visitors flooded the town last week to take part in the annual event at the Young Golf Club, with 194 players from 59 clubs represented.

“We are 20 to 25 players up on last year, and possibly the biggest field we’ve had,” Kearney said. “We’d be very close.”

Players from as far away as Queensland, top clubs in Sydney and not to forget our local golfers, totalled just over 700 rounds on the course which Kearney praised as being in tip-top condition.

“The course is in magnificent condition thanks to our greenkeeper Ben Lucas and his staff,” he said.

Golfers were treated to a special visit by the Young Heritage Motor Car Club who parked on the course on Tuesday to showcase some of their finest vintage vehicles.

The week wrapped up on Friday night when 178 members and visitors headed to the Young Golf Club once more for the official presentation dinner.

Results from the presentation will appear in Wednesday’s edition of The Young Witness.

As expected with close to 200 people visiting, Young received an economic boost over the week.

“There’d be nearly $3 million worth of income for the town while they’re here. It’d be at least over $2 million inserted into the community from the event this week, that’s for sure,” Kearney said.

“We consider it a very valuable tourist attraction to the town and district this time of year and it’s a great opportunity for the cherry industry to be publicised.

“Every visitor here has been so impressed with our golf club, our golf course and our town, and all is good! And of course they’re here to buy cherries, and many have bought boxes, boxes and more boxes!”

Kearney wishes to thank the club’s local members who generously loaned out their golf carts to visitors over the week.

“We are very grateful,” he said.

“It wouldn’t happen if we didn’t have the generosity of our members, most of the visitors are 50-plus so they wouldn’t come if they didn’t have that opportunity.”
