YOUNG’S junior Yabbies stole the show at the Southern Inland Rugby Union (SIRU) junior talent trial held at Wagga recently, taking out six of the 16 positions.

Hennessy Catholic College students Ross Everdell (Year 12), Ignacio Bonsembiante (Year 9), James McEvoy (Year 12), Brent Shoard (Year 9) and Hamish Kaveney (Year 12) impressed selectors at the November 13 trial.
The boys earned themselves spots with the SIRU Junior Talent Centre, alongside 10 others ranging from Under 15s to 18s.
“A few kids particularly from Young I’d never seen or heard of before showed a bit of potential, so we thought we’d run with them and see if they can develop a bit further,” SIRU development officer Jack Burey said.
“[The program] allows us to work with them and obviously improve their skills, but we can track their progress throughout the season.
“By training in that environment it gives you a good lead into going into ACT selections, particularly in that school boys age and the Junior Gold Cup.”
The boys will attend six to eight training sessions between December and March, mainly focusing on core skills to give them a good lead into the competition season.
“They will train throught the summer leading into the pre-season, [focusing on] fitness and skills to enhance their development a bit,” Burey said.
Selectors also took into account the performance of the junior players throughout the 2014 rugby union season.
“We watched the kids throughout the year to see how they performed, other times they are complete smokies who take us by surprise on the trial day,” Burey said.
“Most of them, except for Iggy and Ben, have come through from the Under 17s. They had a good year but lost the grand final, so that’s obviously been a major factor as to why the boys have come out of the woodwork from what they’ve done during the club season.”

ROSS EVERDELL: A bit of a smoker and he’s pretty quick.
IGNACIO BONSEMBIANTE - He’s got quite a good skill set and willingness to learn. He’s not a bad player at all.
JAMES McEVOY - He’s a little bit of a different one, I've seen him in the past before but he stood out during the game. He’s quite physical.
BRENT SHOARD - He’s pretty light on ball, I’m sure he’ll improve from being in the program.
HAMISH KAVENEY - His size and height in that second row...those attributes are always something we’re after in a second row.
