It's that time of the week again when we take a look back at what's been happening in Young this week. Every week we compile our top stories from around the shire over the last seven days&nbsp;to form this photo gallery and keep you updated. This week's news summary&nbsp;is from November 24-28. THEY NEED YOUR HELP: At 26, with two healthy children and bright plans for her future, Michaela Perrin from Young had everything to live for. In a tragic turn of events - and in circumstances yet to be fully explained - she passed away on October 22 in Lismore Hospital from complications, one week after the birth of her third child. Mums and bubs get their walk on: AROUND 20 mums and their bubs took part in Young’s first Postnatal Depression Awareness Week Pram Walk on Thursday. The women - lead by a bright yellow, hand-made banner - strolled up Boorowa Street before finishing at Anderson Park for an information talk put on by Young Community Health staff. Young well represented at roundtable: Almost 40 mayors, general managers and councillors from 13 central west councils gathered in Grenfell for the roundtable meeting with local government minister Paul Toole on Friday, November 7. And reports have come in that Young was very well represented. The open forum was hosted by Member for Burrinjuck Katrina Hodgkinson and the future of local government in rural areas was top of the agenda.

Bridie brightens up hospital: Artwork created by St Mary’s Primary School student Bridie Minehan (11) is now hanging in the Paediatric Unit of Wagga Base Hospital after she won a state-wide art competition. Operation Art is an initiative of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the NSW Department of Education and Communities. Antibiotic awareness: Last week was Antibiotic Awareness Week and Young District Hospital staff were out to promote its cause. Young Health Service manager Joanne Garlick, clinical nurse educator Katrina Green and Dr Chetan Valabjee were out to reinforce the message of how patients need to complete their antibiotic course. Young Lions Club special meeting: The Young Lions Club hosted a special gathering that included service awards, life and new membership presentations. RDA celebrates successful year: Young Riding for Disabled thanked all of their marvellous volunteers, who cheerfully turn up and do everything from fixing storm damaged fences to late night hay carting as well as helping every Tuesday and every second Thursday for the last 12 months. A tree of yellow flowers: Young Witness reader Rita Savage snapped this yellow creeper growing over a tree stump lower end of Demondrille Street. Mrs Savage said the whole tree and creeper was about 30 feet high and looked like a hand with fingers pointing  upwards.

Near record numbers: The Young Golf Club had a near record field for the 2014 Young Cherry Festival Veteran’s Week of Golf. Visitors flooded the town last week to take part in the annual event at the Young Golf Club, with 194 players from 59 clubs represented. Fire waiting to happen: Residents of Pine View Circuit have long harboured concerns about the potential of fire in a neighbouring vacant and overgrown lot. Their fears were realised last week when fire broke out. Now they want something done about the block. File photo.

Showing true Christmas spirit: With Christmas just 29 days away, two local groups are frantically working away to ensure everyone feels the joy this festive season. The Young Salvation Army corps leader Laurie Anderson with Job Centre Australia Transition to Work’s Kelli Thomson-Jones, Charlie Parkman, Lucinda Bryant, Katelyn Gales, Nellie Rand and Tai Seuao are all hands on deck in preparation for the Christmas appeal at the Salvation Army Church on Clarke Street.

Agriculture academy on track despite rumours: There's been talk that the proposed agricultural college plans for the former Mercy Care Hospital have been shelved, but assurances from the director of the Australia Agriculture Academy Greg Medway has been given to The Witness the project is still going ahead.

Rail line decision delayed: Young councillor Stuart Freudenstein (pictured) has joined Cowra mayor Bill West in expressing his disappointment in the three-month delay on the decision whether or not to revive the Blayney-Demondrille railway line. Transport for NSW (TfNSW) recently announced the decision on the rail line will be made another three months after December, taking any progress until after the March state election. A decision on the tender process was originally due in December, after four parties indicated their interest in restoring and reopening the line in October 2013. Photo by Christine Speelman.

Showground beefs up security: The Young Showground has installed CCTV around the grounds to beef up security in the wake of last month’s fire. Showground trust member Ray Blackwood - who has overseen the installation of the cameras - has put trouble makers on notice. Photo by Daniella White.

The A-Z on how to recycle: If you’re not sure how to recycle or properly dispose of an unwanted item, don’t fret - council has a guide in place. Young Shire Council launched an A-Z Product Recycling and Disposal Guide during National Recycling Week (October 10-16). Council director Craig Filmer put together a display at the council offices for the public.

The class of ‘64’s coastal reunion: Members of Young High School’s class of 1964 held a 50th anniversary reunion on November 11 and 12 at Coolangatta Estate, Shoalhaven Heads. They were joined by a number of those who had left at the end of 1963 after completing Fourth Year. In all, there were 30 former students plus 23 partners. Photo submitted.

Junior Yabbies nip to the top: YOUNG’S junior Yabbies stole the show at the Southern Inland Rugby Union (SIRU) junior talent trial held at Wagga recently, taking out six of the 16 positions. Davis overcomes challenges: Young High School's Ben Davis was the sixth member from the Young Yabbies to be selected for the Southern Inland Rugby Union Junior Talent Development Squad. Guilty plea: A FORMER Catholic primary school principal from Young was found with an explicit picture of a 13-year-old Canberra boy, uncovered by the Catholic Education Office in April last year, after they confiscated his school-issued iPhone, iPad, and laptop over an IT policy breach. Michael Philpot is currently facing a charge of using a carriage service to solicit child pornography, and has now pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court. File photo.

Three-state pursuit ends in arrest: At least two people have been charged for a lengthy police pursuit that extended across three states - passing by Temora, Young and Cowra -  with the stolen vehicle allegedly reaching speeds close to 200km/h. Victoria police began a pursuit with a Nissan X-Trail about 10.25am on October 29 at Benalla.

Have you seen this person? Police have appealed for the public’s help to find a violent offender who smashed a bottle over a man’s head after he failed to turn up at court last week. Carl Neilson’s reckless wounding charge was listed for sentence at Young Local Court on November 18 but he failed to appear.

Time to send letters to Santa: Australia Post is calling on children of all ages from the Young district to write and post their Christmas letters and wish lists to Santa Claus nice and early, as the countdown to his busiest night of the year begins! Students take on supportive role: Through hard work and the support of their school and community, two Young High students are now trained mentors for young Aboriginal girls in the community. Year 10 students Tymika Perceval and Gail Goolagong have spent the year being trained as Sista Speak trainers and will now take on a mentoring and support role for students next year. A year of practice is tested on stage: On Tuesday learning was put to the test when the Karen Leez School of Dance had their first ever school matinee. Students from primary schools, including Young Public, Young North Public, St Mary’s Primary, and even a few little kiddies from Annette’s Place attended to watch the dance. Wartime memories revived: Over the last several weeks a local team of performers – musicians, actors and singers - has performed three shows in three towns to celebrate the History of War, the two major world conflicts in which Australian forces were involved. School thanks tradies: Hennessy Catholic College has thanked local tradesmen, by way of a barbecue, for their hard work as the school reaches its final stages of upgrades. The school has undergone drastic changes since first announcing in August last year it was one of 58 NSW schools to be allocated a new Trade Training Centre. Murringo breeder takes out $600,000 race: MURRINGO greyhound breeder Paul Wheeler claimed the most prize money ever won in an Australian greyhound race in Friday night’s $600,000 TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park. Dyna Villa, trained by Jenny Hunt, claimed a $420,000 first prize. The victory was almost 15 years to the day since Wheeler had won the first of his three Melbourne Cups. Photo submitted.

Young rates one of the best: Rod Davies from Golf NSW (left) recently spent time reviewing golf facilities in Young. He rated Young one of the best country courses he has visited. Soccer committee excited for season to come: The Young Lions Soccer Club recently had their AGM where last year’s board has been re-elected. The club’s frontline committee is Greg Dunn, Paul Cameron, Darren Arthur and David Brouwer. 

Darts 2014 presentation night: (Back) Mark Goodlock, Josh Hamilton, Peter Noordhuis, (front) Vic Rose, Jenny Eldridge and Greg  L'Estrange were announced as A Grade winners at this year's Young Darts presentation night.

Businesses show their support: While you’re reading this, up to 50 people from Young and surrounds are making their way home from Dubbo. But they aren’t driving - they are participating in Camp Quality’s Walk and Cycle for a Life campaign. The group aim to raise $50,000.

End result, joint winners: The competition year for the Young Squash Club wrapped up last week with the completion of the summer single round competition. Melissa Hewson of team Aldo’s Freight and Kerri Palmer of team Ray White were joint winners.
