Young’s team - consisting of Ian Page, Ian Broderick, Steve Dewar, Craig Chapman of Murrumbateman and PGA professional Warren Coulsen of Canberra - travelled to Queensland last week for the national pro-amateur finals.

A practice round on Friday was followed by two rounds of golf over the weekend. 

Young sat at 61 off the stick, 11 under par over the two days. 

This score left the team just below the middle of the field in 17th position by day two with a nett score of 54.4.

Come day three, Monday, Young was eight under par in their final round with a nett score of 59.4. Due to a storm their score was scrapped as the championship leaders didn’t complete the round. 

“They (PGA officials) said whoever was leading on the second day won the whole lot, so it didn’t make any difference,” Page said.

Despite not taking the championship title, Page and his team mates enjoyed the experience.

“It was tough competition, everyone was fair dinkum while they were on the course, but it was a big social event off the course... and very tiring... you need to be young and fit,” he said.

But all was not lost - the boys finished on the podium on Saturday’s Rock of Ages karaoke night. 

“We did quite well in the karaoke night - we ran second - far better performed in the karaoke than in the  golf,” Page laughed.

“They were all very impressed with it - we actually got beaten by a professional. 

“This was far more important than the golf.”

But the team has every intention of returning to the finals next year to have another shot.

“Yaknow what? The chances of going back are very minute, simply because it’s such a hard event to make the final,” Page said.

“You’ve really gotta play well and have plenty of luck to go your way to make it - which obviously we did this year - but to go back would be magnificent.”

Page was full of praise for the finals which he said was organised to a tee.
