Up for a mention was Jim Cusack and the Chamber of Commerce for arranging the Christmas Market Day on December 14.
Councillor John McGregor said he was impressed with how busy the town was over the weekend of the market day.
“[I want to recognise them] for the really big effort they’ve done in getting Young looking like a really big shopping town...I don’t think we’ve seen the town any busier than what we saw on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday…” Cr McGregor said.
“I was walking down the street and I thought, ‘God this town looks like a really good shopping area.’”
He also put forward a motion congratulating Woolworths staff for their efforts and the donation of gifts to the residents of Southern Cross Care and Mount St Joseph’s.
“To see the smiles on their faces was just fantastic,” Cr McGregor said.
Also getting a nod were the three Cherry Queen entrants, Caitlin Muller, Jessica Saines and Emily Hardy, for their contribution to local charities and the community.
Councillor Sandy Freudenstein thought Australian cricketer Nathan Lyon’s parents also deserved recognition for their son’s success, but others needed some convincing.
“I think that’s a bit of a stretch,” councillor Stuart Freudenstein said.
The motion eventually passed, recognising Bronwyn, Steven and Nathan Lyon for the success he achieved in day four and five of the recent test and for the subsequent promotion of the town.
Outgoing Young High School principal Andrew Turvey was recognised by Cr Sandy Freudenstein, asking that a letter of thanks be sent to him for his time at the school.
Councillor Brian Ingram put forward a motion that Kaleigh Forbutt and the Young Youth Council be recognised for the tremendous effort in organising the Cherry Chase.
While Councillor Miller asked that Dean Cafe and the 18 walkers and 26 riders be recognised and congratulated for raising funds for Camp Quality.
