It took the Salvos two years before they found a new premises and, in June 2013, they opened their new store on the corner of Boorowa Street and Possum Lane.

Eighteen months on, the new store is thriving. 

Young Salvation Army Corps leader Laurie Anderson is delighted with the business the shop has generated since it has reopened.

“It’s been very good,” Laurie said.

“Our location has also helped us; being on the main road and with a carpark out the back.” 

Laurie has been the local Corps Leader since 2012. He came to Young from Cootamundra, via Albury. 

He believes the best part of the Salvation Army’s work is that every cent raised stays in the community.

“Everything we raise stays in Young,” he said

“We try to serve the community with reasonable clothing and furniture at a reasonable price.”

The red bin out the front of store fills up almost every two days, as does the bin at the Salvation Army’s Church.

Laurie says they sell up to a tonne of clothes a week.

This he credits to the manager who, he says, has laid out the shop beautifully, but is always trying to improve the shop - considered a work in progress. 

The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers and appreciate the smallest amount of time given up to volunteer. 

“It doesn’t have to be 40 hours a week; it can be four if that’s all they can do,” Laurie said.
