The Young Criterion Hotel Coyotes have won the first silverware of the 2014/15 season, the Doug Wright Shield.
An entertaining match saw the Coyotes hold on to victory by 13 runs despite the efforts of the Young Blues.
Played at Holman Oval, the Coyotes scrambled to 128 from their 20-overs with man of the match Kris Scelly top scoring with 28.
A number of contributions throughout the order helped the Coyotes, especially at the end, as Brett Humphreys (14), Kyle McGovern (nine not out) and Kye Tiedemann (six not out) all added valuable runs.
Nick Corbett and Hagon Williams started well keeping runs to a minimum and also removed the in form Coyotes openers Ben Allen (5) and Geoff Palmer (15) respectively.
But it was Jake McIllhatton that did the damage with the ball taking 4-21 from his four overs.
The target of 128 proved defendable as the Blues failed to form partnerships in reply.
Jonte Powderly (5) was first to go and when Josh Carmody had Luke Cosgrove caught for 2 shortly after the game seemed inevitable.
But Zac Williams went about reviving the innings with a game high 37 along with Blues captain Cameron Jones (23). With the match in the balance the Coyotes
were able to reclaim the advantage removing both Williams and Jones in a matter of overs.
Scelly (3-12) and Kane Tiedemann (3-20) proved the difference as the Blues were restricted to 115.
Coyotes’ skipper Geoff Palmer praised the efforts of his bowlers at the end and was extremely happy to take home the Doug Wright Shield.
“We’ve enjoyed the challenge each week and it was great to get a win over the Blues today [Saturday]”, Palmer said.
“I thought young Kye Tiedemann bowled really well for us, he was on a hattrick at one stage, he was really impressive.
“Also a few blokes with the bat I thought set up the win, Kris Scelly and Brett Humphreys at the end in particular.
“Our focus now goes back to the 40-over stuff, hopefully we can get a more consistent team on the field and we’ll give it a good crack.”
