The Men’s team will again have a youthful look about them, with several players from the junior ranks already having joined the squad.
This, with return of experienced players Dmitry Sytin and David Brouwer from long term injuries, has coach Mark Mellish optimistic about the team’s chances for 2015.
“Last year I think that, although we were a very good side, we kind of lacked the experience to take us to the next level on a week in week out basis” Mellish said.
“And although some of our key players have moved towns or left for uni this year, both Dima (Sytin) and Dave will be able to provide us with some much needed experience and mentoring for the younger players in the squad.
“It’s no secret that we are one of the smallest statured sides in the competitions, but we believe the technical skills that some of our younger players have gives us a real advantage.”
Meanwhile, Paul Reilly has stepped down after reforming the Women’s team two years ago and his role as coach has been assumed by Brett Humphries for 2015.
Brett will look to build on Paul’s work and develop a formidable line-up.
With many of the 2014 squad returning, including captain Pat Dawe, the women’s team are hoping to build from their successful season last year which saw them reach the semi-finals in only their second year back in competition.
“We have a really good group of girls, and I think that this is partly due to the fact that the team is about having fun – the success we have seems to come because of this” Humphreys said.
“It’s this type of attitude which is appealing to a lot of players and I encourage anyone who would like to join us to come along and see how they enjoy it.
“We have girls of all skill levels playing and in my time with the Lions I have seen a number of friendships be made on and off the field.”
Training sessions for both sides are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening at Gus Smith Oval starting at 6pm.
All interested players turning 16 and over this year are welcome to attend.
Any junior players turning 14 or 15 this year and would like to come along for development training with either squad are also welcome.
All players are to bring boots, shin pads and a water bottle.
