The popular Australian romance writer met with council workers along the walkway of Burran-gong Creek where she was assisted in planting a Eucalyptus Ficifolia (red flowering gum).
“It’s the first official tree I’ve ever planted. I feel like the queen!” she said.
“It’s amazing to have that opportunity, it makes me feel very special.”
Tree planting is an annual tradition normally held during Young’s Australia Day celebrations, but this year was delayed due to soaring temperatures.
Valerie was all praise for the January 26 celebrations at Carrington Park, saying the standout was presenting the Young Senior Citizen of the Year Award to a deserving recipient.
“It was wonderful, I had the best day,” she said.
“It was a great welcome from the community, friends and different groups and I think a high point was presenting the Young Citizen of the Year to Gerry Bailey.
“When I announced it the reaction proved what a popular choice he was.
“It was one of the best organised Australia Days I’ve attended as an ambassador and cudos to the organisers.”
Valerie now looks forward to seeing the tree grow as she settles in Young.
