Be prepared to wake up every morning over the next three weeks to find something new in the main street as council workers go about the job while we sleep.
The majority of the upgrades are scheduled to be carried out between 6pm and 6am, with expectations of completion by April 2, weather permitting.
Road closures, diversions and changes to parking will be used for most sections of the work.
Last week council staff were busy preparing the southern end of Zouch Street and eastern end of Boorowa Street, where the works focus on first.
This was done by ripping out the pedestrian refuges ahead of the area’s resurfacing on Wednesday night.
“As soon as we’ve laid down the hot mix, we’ll pour new refuges with the higher kerb, wider gap in the middle and narrower road,” Young Shire Council’s operations director Dirk Wymer said.
“These three elements will provide less distance to cross and more protection for pedestrians.
“At this stage it’s going well.”
Week one consists of upgrading from the roundabout at KFC in Zouch Street to the South West Slopes Credit Union at the Boorowa and Lynch streets intersection.
“Providing the project goes to plan,” Mr Wymer said.
“We’ll resurface on Wednesday night, pour refuges Thursday night and by Friday, it’ll be all hunky-dory.
“The only thing that won’t be done by Friday will be the red infill for the refuges, but the kerb and gutter will be there.”
The street’s garden beds and irrigation will also be set up and ready to go.
After that, council workers will work block by block, with the Main and Short streets intersection to the Sarah Musgrave Bridge and the ‘S’ bend in Elizabeth Street included in the project.
Short Street will be completed under traffic control.
