The presentation night gives recognition to these dedicated young athletes who can train up to four or five times a week and who have achieved some outstanding results in the past 12 months.
Many swimmers from the YASC are representing and winning at regional and state levels.
YASC coaches - Kylie Rutter, Deanna McEvoy, Pete Ward, Tami Stuart and John Hayes - all agree that often the sport of swimming is underestimated by many who do not understand the dedication required to become a really good swimmer.
Swimming fitness is different to other forms of fitness and you can quickly loose it if you are not training enough.
In the country it is very hard for our kids to compete against others who are swimming all year round but despite this they achieve some remarkable results in the timeframe they have to train.
“We are hoping to offer a winter swimming program this year to those members who are interested in continuing to train over the winter season,” the coaches said.
“While the training won’t be as intense as during the summer season we hope by offering it, it will keep some level of fitness over the long break during winter.”
The presentation night represents the culmination of the year’s results. The majority of the presentation and for age champion in particular are based on the swimmers in each age group competing in eight events over four weeks of championships which started in early February.
Head coach Kylie Rutter said the championships are designed to give a variety of swimming events for swimmers to compete in both distance and sprints events, so the swimmer who competes most successfully in all of these events through a points system is selected as age champion, runner-up and third.
“Most school carnivals lack the distance events and while they are great to see the sprinters we also like to see the distance swimming included to get a more accurate result of a swimming ability,” she said.
Swimming club president Felicity Crawford has been extremely pleased with the numbers this year, particularly in the younger age groups.
This year has been extremely busy for our coaches who give up so much of their time to train our swimmers.
“Our coaches are very dedicated and will be seen poolside at 6am in the morning when most people are still in bed,” Felicity said. “They also give up their afternoons to coach and should be congratulated on their dedication to our local swimmers.
“We have had a very successful season and I am looking forward to seeing all the hard work continuing into the next season of swimming with the great numbers we are currently experiencing.
“I would also like to thank all the very dedicated officials, parents and other dedicated helpers who give up their week time and Fridays to assist with club activities, judging, timekeeping, carnival entries, collation of weekly results and many other jobs.
“The YASC is a volunteer run organisation and without these people who put their hand up to assist in our club activities we would not be able to continue to run our club.
“It’s a great club and offers a great variety of local opportunities for those looking to become involved in swimming and to gain all the great health benefits that go along with it. It also offers regular training, Friday night competition club nights, weekend regional carnivals, Speedo Sprints and now the newly-introduced local development days and the winter program.”
