Year 7 student Liam Wymer started the extension classes with Aurora College in February.
The program works in collaboration with his studies at Young High, where he is physically based.
He is one of six students from the Cootamundra electorate, with four in Year 7 and two in Year 11, and the only student from Young.
The other students attend Cowra and West Wyalong high schools.
Specialist teachers, including teachers from Cowra High School and West Wyalong High School, have been handpicked for Aurora College and come from a further 30 schools across the state.
Classes started with a Year 7 selective stream of 55 students and Year 11 students in selected subjects.
Liam said he’s loved the opportunities he has had so far, which included meeting the other students in the program at a boarding school.
He’s even about to be kitted out with a new laptop.
Liam chatted with local MP and candidate for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson when she visited Young High School recently.
Ms Hodgkinson said the selective schools provide further opportunities for academically gifted students in rural and remote NSW.
“Attending a selective school is an opportunity that until now has only been available for students in metropolitan areas and larger regional centres,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
