After weeks of nagging about playing footy - of nonstop tackling in the hallway and footballs clanging on the roof - finally the time has come to play a game.
Tonight the town comp begins at Keith Cullen Oval with the annual two weeks of trial games. For those new to the club, registered kids have been placed into teams and will play two 15 minute games tonight and next Wednesday to make sure teams are evenly matched and all is fair. This means that some changes may be made this week and next, but more than likely these will be the teams.
Remember that tonight and the entire season is non-competitive, so we encourage participation, trying hard and having fun.
Please remind both the super competitive kids and the shy ones that the main thing is to have a go.
Measure their game on enjoyment achieved and other things like how dirty his knees get.
One of our favourite Under 11s coaches has been held up with family issues in New Zealand.
At this stage the Knights are without a coach, so I am looking for the help of a few dads from that team.
When Saul gets back, just try to keep him away though. He informs me the Knights are his boys!!
Tonight’s games start at 5.30, but we ask you get there early so you can find your team, warm up suitably and feel comfortable.
Games will only be quick, but it will be a good start. Next week ( April 1) will be played under the same format from 5.30pm. The local town comp will begin playing after school holiday returns on April 18.
Talk to your coach as some town teams may start training that week when school returns. Town teams only train once per week.
All players should note that all players are encouraged to train and play for the rep teams (Young Cherrypickers) each week. Rep footy starts in the middle of school holidays. First round for Young rep teams is on April 11.
Our league tag teams are all training now, so they will begin on April 11. Check out our Young Junior League website where draws are available, including the town comp draw.
A sausage sizzle will be available tonight and next Wednesday for those wanting something to eat during the trial nights.
